GQ Civitan honors Rowan County Sheriff’s Department chaplain

GRANITE QUARRY — The Granite Quarry Civitan Club held its annual awards and officer installation banquet on Sept. 5. The club honored Chaplain Michael Taylor of the Rowan County Sheriff’s Department as its Distinguished Citizen for 2019.
Chaplain Taylor was noted for his work with the Shield-a-Badge program over the past 24 years while chaplain with the Rowan County Sheriff, providing spiritual support and counseling to officers and staff as well as officer families, jail officers, and worked in hostage situations. He is a Past President of the NC Sheriff’s Chaplains Association and holds the Order of the Long Leaf Pine from the State of North Carolina.

Also recognized were recipients of awards from N. C. District West Civitan:
Martha Miller, Outstanding President for medium sized clubs;
Lanny Merrell, longest tenure of perfect attendance at Club functions in District West at 44 years;
Franklin Merrell, NCDW Distinguished Citizenship Award for his long service with the Boy Scouts and community endeavors;
Martha Miller, Civitan of the Year.
Past Governor Woody Weddington installed officers for the incoming year that begins on Oct. 1. Rick Wilson will be the incoming club President.
