Salisbury freshman JyMikaah Wells has been invited to play running back for the U.S. football national team in the 11th annual International Bowl that will be played on Jan. 14, 2020, at Cowboy Stadium.

Wells scored a touchdown in this summer’s middle school All-American game (he had another TD called back) in Canton, Ohio.

Wells scored his first high school touchdown for the Hornets last week.

 

HS cross country

In the pre-North Piedmont Conference Meet held at Salisbury Community Park on Wednesday, West Rowan’s boys won with a score of 33.

Issac Castro (19:06) finished third to lead the Falcons. Damian Ackman (5th), Luke Harrison (6th), Drake Barclay (9th) and Jacob Bogle (10th) were the other scorers for West.

Carson’s Zac Barbee was the individual winner in 17:36. Carson’s TJ Jones was fourth.

Thomas Ferguson (7th) led East Rowan.

North Iredell’s Patrick Mahaffey was second.

In the Pre-NPC girls race at Salisbury Community Park, Carson’s girls won with a score of 32.

Taylor Conrad was second in 21:33 to lead the Cougars. Kimberly Barrera (4th), Lani Isley (5th), Victoria Post (10th) and Montana Brown (11th) were the other scorers for Carson.

The individual winner was North Iredell’s Jonna Strange in 18:40.

Adalie Harrison led East Rowan with a third-place finish.

Megyn Spicer was eighth to lead West Rowan.

 

HS girls tennis

South Iredell won 7-2 against West Rowan in North Piedmont Conference tennis on Thursday.

The Vikings won third-set tiebreakers at 1, 2 and 3 singles.

Skylar Jahnke won at No. 4 singles for the Falcons and teamed with Mira White to win the No. 2 doubles match.

HS volleyball

East Rowan’s volleyball team swept Concord on Wednesday.

Leah Hinceman had 12 kills and four blocks for the Mustangs (3-3).

Zoe Larson had 28 assists and four aces. Hannah Larson had six aces. Elly Davis had 13 digs.

South Rowan beat Thomasville 25-13, 25-8 and 25-18 on Thursday in a Central Carolina Conference match  with Kira Rymer getting 20 kills, 13 digs and 12 assists. Anna Rymer had 16 kills and 15 assists. Payton Black had 16 digs.

South (7-1, 6-0) has lost only to West Rowan.

West Rowan rolled 25-22, 25-10 and 25-13 against Mount Tabor on Thursday.

Kelcie Love had nine kills for the Falcons (7-0). Tori Hester had eight kills, four aces and five digs. Madelyn VonCanon had two kills and five digs. Ana Blackledge had three kills. Noe Gaeta set well and had five digs. Brooke Kennerly had five digs. Ashlee Ennis had four digs and four aces. Allison Ennis had 18 assists.

JV volleyball

South Rowan’s jayvee volleyball team swept Thomasville on Thursday.

Emma Owens had 13 assists for the Raiders (7-1). Kali Nelson had six kills. Tamaria Rhyne had five kills. Ava Huffman had five aces.

JV football

Akin Robinson scored the only touchdown of the game and West Rowan used a great defensive effort to beat Cox Mill 7-6.

Hunter Burris and Jordan Galarza scored  the Carson touchdowns

Burris passed to Kadrian Smith for a 2-point conversion.

A.L. Brown won 48-0 against East Rowan on Thursday.

Lexington won 34-14 against North Rowan on Thursday.

Kemon O’Kelly caught a 70 yard scoring pass for the Cavaliers. R onnie Fennell had a 47-yard scoring run. Orion Harris passed to Trey Johnson for a 2-point conversion.

Bryson Crisco, Jamar Jefferies, DJ Simmons led North’s defense.

College soccer

Catawba was picked fourth in the  South Atlantic Conference women’s soccer poll.

First team preseason honors went to Catawba junior midfield Jovana Sanchez and sophomore defender Katie Webb.

Sophomore defender Katie Beck and senior goalkeeper Shelby Thompson were second team picks.

Lincoln Memorial was selected as the favorite for the conference title. The Railsplitters were followed in the balloting by Carson-Newman and Lenoir-Rhyne.

  

Mid. school tennis

North Rowan Middle’s boys tennis team won 9-0 against Knox.

Winning in singles for North (1-2) were Luke Hicks, Antonio Astudillo, Addison Day, Anders Thompson, Chynue Vang and Sam Lisenby.   Winning in doubles were Hicks/Astudillo, Day/Thompson and Vang/Connor Koontz.

Mid. school softball

North Rowan Middle won 17-6 against Knox.

Katie Peeler had nine strikeouts. Allie Peeler had three hits. Kayla Craven, Taylor Kelley and Alyvia Kelley had two hits.

Kennedi Fisher had two hits for Knox.

Salisbury Academy

The Salisbury Academy middle school jayvee volleyball team defeated Davidson Day School 2-1 for the team’s first win.

Salisbury hosts Hickory Day School on Sept. 10.

  The Salisbury Academy middle school jayvee soccer team defeated Davidson Day School 5-0.

Abdul Eliwa scored three goals, while Luke Fowler and Lucas Webb had one each.

  The  Salisbury Academy middle school boys cross country finished first with a score of 31 in a five-team meet at  Southside Park in Newton.

Leading the Jaguars were Jacob Mills (1st), Evan Koontz (6th), Ethan Ott (10th) and Finnegan Avery (14th).

The Jaguars will be back in action on Monday.

  The Salisbury Academy middle school girls cross country team finished second in a five-team meet with a score of 36.

Leading the team were Mary Grace Antosek (6th), Millie Wymbs (8th), Anna Kate Goodman (10th) and Cora Wymbs (12th).

The team will compete on Monday at Salisbury Community Park.
