Salisbury Civitans win major awards at district convention

HICKORY — On Aug. 2, Representatives from 52 Civitan Clubs attended the 54th Annual Convention of North Carolina District West of Civitan International at the Crowne Plaza.

At the Governor’s Banquet and awards ceremony, the Civitan Club of Salisbury, the largest club in the district, won eight top honors in the large club category and overall category, and individual club members were recognized and honored.

Club Awards:

-Governor’s Award – for meeting the requirements of Honor Club
-Area 4W Honor Club – for meeting the requirements of Honor Club
-Governor’s Top Award – Honor Club (overall)
-Governor’s Top Award – Honor Club – Large Category (30+)
-Candy Box Award – GOLD, Wanda Huntley, Candy Box Chair
-Boys and Girls Home of NC, Lake Waccamaw – Highest Giving Club in the District
-Navigator Award for support of the Civitan International Research Center in BirAmingham, Ala.
-Best Club Bulletin: Editor Maggie Blackwell and Publisher Diane Goodnight

Individual club members honored:

-Outstanding Club Secretary: Mark Beymer
-Distinguished Civitan: Jim Greene
-Distinguished Humanitarian: Patty Lefevers
-District Honor Key: Linda Jones
-Perfect Attendance: Dr. Norman Sloop, for 56 years

At the conclusion of the banquet, Governor Christy passed the gavel to Governor-Elect John Sofley from Salisbury. Sofley, who retired from the City of Salisbury, will serve as district governor for 2019-2020.

Other Salisbury Civitans honored in the program were Mark Curran, Victory Junction and Judge Advocate; Linda Jones, District Area Director; Wanda Huntley, Fundraising; Jackie Curran, Club Recognition; and Wayne Mullis, Civitan of the Decade.

The Civitan Club of Salisbury was founded in 1922 and is one of the largest Civitan Clubs in the world. It raises funds to help people with developmental disabilities. The Club meets Thursdays at noon at the Country Club. For more information, contact Mary Arey at 704-640-5545.
