Area Sports: Rowan County Jamboree set for Friday at North

North Rowan’s football team is the host for the second annual Rowan County Jamboree on Friday.

All six Rowan county teams will be in action, along with West Iredell and West Stanly.

Teams aren’t matched up with teams they’re scheduled to play in the regular season.

The cost is $6.

The schedule

• Carson vs. West Stanly, 6 p.m.

• East Rowan vs. West Iredell, 7 p.m.

• Salisbury vs. West Rowan, 8 p.m.

• South Rowan vs. North Rowan, 9 p.m.

Football edition

The Post’s annual football edition is scheduled for publication next week.

Opening night for all the Rowan schools and Davie is Friday, Aug. 23.  A.L. Brown will get started on Aug. 30.

College football

Elon held its first camp scrimmage on Sunday, and Kortez Weeks (West Rowan) had six catches for 139 yards and two touchdowns.

Local golf

Nick Lyerly (East Rowan, UNC Greensboro) shot 5-over 75 on Monday in the first round of the U.S. Amateur in Pinehurst and is tied for 152nd in a field of 312.

Golfers will play 18 holes of stroke play again today.

The top 64 advance to match play on Wednesday through Sunday.

Lyerly has an 8:48 tee time today.

Salisbury’s Charlie Barr is competing today in the   Hope Valley Junior Invitational at Hope Valley Country Club in Durham.

The event is a 54-hole stroke play tournament.

In McCanless Couples play on Sunday, the team of Susan Wydner, Don Carpenter and Azalee & David Huneycutt edged the team of Walt Kincaid, Calvin Smith and Pam & Ralph Carver on a scorecard playoff.

Ralph Carver had longest putt. Anne Edelstein had closest to the pin.

Legion baseball

Host Randolph County beat Virginia twice on Sunday, 3-0 and 4-3, to win the Mid-Atlantic Regional.

Randolph got great pitching from Trevor Marsh and Braxton Davis.

Other teams winning regionals to make the World Series were  Louisiana, New Mexico, Missouri, Illinois, Massachusetts, North Dakota and Idaho.

Randolph starts pool play in the World Series in Shelby on Thursday at 7 p.m. against Massachusetts.

   

Lady Legion softball

Davidson County Post 8 won twice on Monday as the state’s Lady Legion softball  tournament got under way in Shelby.

Davidson edged Caldwell 2-1 and topped Shelby 6-3. In the Shelby game, Ivey Ray had three hits, while Sarah Hilton and Kady Livesay had two RBIs each.

• Davidson got excellent  pitching from Riley Lingerfelt to beat Caldwell. Korina Lookabill got the game-winning hit in the seventh.

It’s a three-day, five-team tournament. In the other game on Monday, Cumberland beat Alamance 11-4.

Rowan anniversary

Today  is the 50th anniversary of Rowan County winning the 1969 American Legion state championship.

A story on that team is scheduled for this week.

Hoop Fest

Rowan County Hoop Fest is coming on Oct. 26.

The event will be held at South Rowan.

The entry fee for teams is $125. Admission is $5. Concessions will be available.

Jayvee teams are welcomed.

Minor leagues

Staten Island’s Bryan Blanton (Catawba) had a great outing on Friday, striking out six while allowing one hit in 3 1/3 innings.

Peyton Williams (Catawba) had a rough stretch with Danville, but he’s turned in three straight strong relief outings, with six strikeouts and no walks.

Lake County’s Ike Freeman (East Rowan, UNC) was placed on the 7-day injured list on Saturday. He’d knocked in runs in three straight games before the injury.

Intimidators

KANNAPOLIS — Ramon Beltre had a walk-off two-run double with one out in the 10th inning, as the Kannapolis Intimidators beat the Greensboro Grasshoppers 7-6 late Monday.

The Intimidators scored one run in the ninth before Greensboro answered in the next half-inning when Jack Herman scored on a sacrifice to take a 6-5 lead.

Beltre doubled twice and singled, driving home three runs in the win.

Lane Ramsey (4-6) got the win in relief while Zac Susi (0-1) took the loss in the South Atlantic League game.

Jonah Davis homered, doubled twice and singled, scoring three runs while driving in two for the Grasshoppers. Michael Gretler tripled and singled twice, driving in two runs.

Despite the loss, Greensboro is 8-4 against Kannapolis this season.
