Area Sports: Rowan anglers finished second

Rowan County’s  Hayden Hammond and Hunter Alexander placed second in the  Bassmaster Junior National Championship held Tuesday and Wednesday on Carroll County Recreational Lake in Huntingdon, Tenn.

The Rowan 13-year-olds held the lead after the first round but couldn’t land a big fish on Wednesday.

They caught bass weighing 14 pounds, 4 ounces on Tuesday. Their catch was 5 pounds, 6 ounces on Wednesday for a total of 19 pounds, 10 ounces.

The 14-year-old winners from Ohio checked in with 20 pounds, 3 ounces and won $2,000 in scholarships.

The Rowan youngsters won $1,000 in scholarship money for their runner-up finish.

Sixty-two teams from 32 states and Canada competed in the event.

Legion baseball

ASHEBORO — Wilmington Post 10 scored five runs in the third and seven in the top of the seventh to pound Maryland 14-4 in its opening game in the Mid-Atlantic Regional on Wednesday evening.

Wilmington’s Brett Kemp drove in three runs, while  Jac Croom, Matt Suggs, Chase Nixon  and Rocco Farmintino  drove in two apiece. Nixon had three of Wilmington’s 15 hits.

Hunter Hodges pitched three shutout innings and left the game with a 6-0 lead.

Post 10 will next face West Virginia today at 4:30 p.m. in a winner’s bracket game. West Virgina edged Delaware 3-2 on Wednesday, while Virginia outscored New Jersey, 8-7.

Host Randolph County Post 45 took an 11-4 lead to the seventh late Wednesday night against New York.

HS football

The Rowan County Jamboree will be held at North Rowan on Friday, Aug. 16.

Admission is $6 for four scrimmages. West Stanly vs. Carson at 6 p.m. West Iredell vs. East Rowan at 7. Salisbury vs. West Rowan at 8, and North Rowan vs. South Rowan at 9 p.m.

CCFL

The Carolina Thundering Herd plays against the Pee Dee Vikings (Darlington, S.C.) on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Catawba.

Both teams are 2-0. The Thundering Herd romped 42-6 against Catawba County on Saturday.
