SALISBURY — Rowan Public Library’s Headquarters branch, at 201 W. Fisher St., will be closed Aug. 12-16 for replacement of the building’s more than 30-year-old chiller.

The library’s air conditioning system currently is operating at about 25% capacity, and many patrons have noticed the warm temperatures.

Once ordered, a new four-compressor chiller took about eight weeks to build. Removal of the old chiller from the first-floor mechanical room and installation of the replacement, which weighs about 150 tons, will require removing a window and widening a door.

Installation will begin Aug. 12.

“It’s an immense, complicated project,” said Melissa Oleen the library’s deputy director. “And the temporary closure will ensure the safety and comfort of our patrons.”

Headquarters’ patrons are invited to visit the East and South branch libraries during the closure.

East Branch, located at 110 Broad St. in Rockwell, is open 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday-Wednesday; 9 a.m.-5 p.m.Thursday-Friday; and 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday. Call 704-216-7840 for details.

South Rowan Regional, located at 920 Kimball Road in China Grove, is open 9 a.m. -9 p.m. Monday-Wednesday; 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Thursday; and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday-Saturday. Contact the branch at 704-216-7727.

During the Headquarters closure, the inter-branch hold system will remain active, and any Headquarters materials placed on hold can be picked up at either the East or South branches. Patrons can select a location for pick-up.

All due dates during the week of Aug. 12 will be extended to Aug. 19.

The adult and children’s outreach programs will continue to operate without interruption.

Headquarters is expected to reopen Aug. 17. Updates will be posted at www.rowanpubliclibrary.org and on the library’s social media accounts.
