Salisbury-Rowan AARP Chapter 4314 will hold its annual ice cream social Aug. 1 at Rufty-Holmes Senior Center, 1120 S. Martin Luther King Jr. Ave.

The program will begin at 1 p.m. with a presentation titled “Movement for Parkinson’s” by Sylvia Swisher, a Rufty-Holmes administrative assistant.

“Movement for Parkinson’s” uses improvisational dance as therapy to improve gait, balance and neural function for people with Parkinson’s disease, according to Swisher, who has 45 years of experience as a dancer and dance educator.

“Daily living requires flexibility and adaptive responses to real-life challenges,” Swisher said. “Movement for Parkinson’s helps maintain functional independence and quality of life.”

The ice cream social will follow, with a “build your own sundae” table of goodies to top off the ice cream.

The program is free, and seniors age 50 and older are welcome.

AARP members are encouraged to bring a friend. Members are asked to bring school supplies to be donated to the Rowan Family Crisis Center’s battered women’s shelter.

The local AARP chapter meets at 1 p.m. the first Thursday of each month at Rufty-Holmes. The local chapter offers a variety of community service, education, advocacy, leadership and fellowship opportunities. Dues are $4 a year.
