Spencer, Granite Quarry lack mayoral candidates …

I am certainly glad to see the enthusiasm in the numbers of applicants this go around for aldermen.

It does not surprise me to see no one wants to crawl into GobbelGator’s throne. The fog that has been hovering over town hall now for quite a few years will take strong leadership on part of every board member, mayor and town manager.

I will also pat Mr. David Treme on the back for the leadership he has already shown.

Era ends: Hightower moves on from East Rowan

Both of my boys played high school and college ball. You think they didn’t get yelled at and cursed at? Of course they did.

Did it sometimes make me angry ? Of course it did, but not to the point where I wanted someone to lose their job.

— Jess and Rita Goldin

I’m not sure how you can convince people to teach or coach for the salary offered when this level of dedication is dismissed so easily. All coaches and teachers should be concerned.

— Cheryl Safrit Gunter

No one has or ever will give as much to Rowan County baseball as Brian Hightower.

He was the most dedicated coach I have ever known.

I’m thankful my son got the chance to play for him. He was fired for speaking the truth in a politically correct world.

— Randy File

My son played for both Coach Hightower and youth baseball for Jeff Safrit. If you don’t like your kid getting yelled at, even with a few expletives in there, don’t play sports.

—Keith Horton

This is a great article and great tribute to a man who put his kids and program above anything else. So disturbing we live in a society where you can have a 99% approval rating and the minority 1% gets their way.

— Brad Strauss

It is another sad day when the county administrators let a parent or group of parents decide the fate of an outstanding person, coach and teacher.

Candy Shoppe on Main finds new home in China Grove

We couldn’t be more excited to have Mr. Banton and his awesome candy store in China Grove.

It’s just another reason for people to come to China Grove to shop, and while they are here, check out our other great stores downtown.

— Rodney Phillips

I stopped in on Farmers Day and loved it. I’m so happy to have a chocolate shop near me. It was delicious. And my 5-year-old was super excited for everything in there.

— Kimberly Sutterlin

Josh Bergeron: Rowan positioned to continue recycling

I hope more people will heed the guidelines as to what is acceptable and also take the little extra effort to rinse items if needed. If feasible I’d like to see flyers distributed that clearly define how to recycle.

Lowe’s, AMVETS partner to plant garden …

The AMVETS Rockwell Post 845 is a hard-working group of doers. We might be a small group but we are mighty.

It was a honor to be able to take part in this on going project and to know that in the future so many hearts and souls will be touched by its beauty.

As homeschool enrollment soars …

The school board has consistently proven it has no intentions whatsoever to consider the facets of education that caring, knowledgeable parents hold dear. Don’t jump onto a sinking ship when you have the option to provide your children the ability to truly learn, not merely perform.

— Franda Raymer

Letter: Go deeper than calling President Trump racist

President Donald Trump is not racist, and the tweets were directed toward the congresswomen’s socialist ideology.

— Vincent Spillman

He is worst than a racist. He is an American fascist.

— Reginald Brown

… Which blocks should receive help during BlockWork …

Was there a call for applications this year? I never saw it.

— Sue McHugh

Letter: Keep children inside when mowing grass

I completely agree. Even the best supervision can still result in a senseless accident. I get nervous seeing kids riding on mowers with adults.

— Lorena Chase Martin

Downtown stakeholders evaluate recent special events

In my opinion, Salisbury merchants should bring back the Zombie Walk, live music and Halloween holiday sales.

I am aware it was planned by individuals, but a group effort on planning and executing this type of event could be a great way to boost attendance of the downtown area.

— Mark Lyerly

My Turn, Tarik Woods: State badly needs Medicaid expansion

We need to keep speaking out and letting our legislators know we expect them to represent all their constituents.
