American Legion baseball: State tournament (Friday’s results, weekend schedule)

CHERRYVILLE — Randolph County rallied for a 7-3 victory against Union County as the American Legion baseball state tournament got underway with the first round of pool play in Cherryville on Friday.
Randolph trailed 3-0 in the fifth. Spencer Lanier drove in two runs to tie the game, and Austin Curry had the hit that put Randolph ahead to stay.
Dawson Davis was the winning pitcher in relief. Trevor Marsh earned a save.

Davidson County lost 12-2 to Fuquay-Varina in pool play on Friday.
Davidson starting pitcher Drew Wright was knocked out in the third inning when Fuquay-Varina scored five runs.
Jake Brown hit a two-run homer in the third inning for Davidson, but Fuquay-Varina answered with a big bottom of the third.

In other games on Friday, Cherryville clobbered Kinston 10-1 and Wilmington outscored the Gaston Braves 12-7.
