SALISBURY — A Wilmington teenager was charged with felony drug possession Wednesday night at a traffic checkpoint where she was caught speeding.

A police officer smelled marijuana coming from her vehicle while checking her license, a report said.

The Salisbury Police Department charged Anna Chau Nguyen, 18, of the 700 block of Hillside Drive, Wilmington, with felony possession with intent to manufacture, sell and deliver a controlled substance; felony maintaining a dwelling or vehicle for trafficking in a controlled substance; and misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance.

Police officers were conducting a traffic checkpoint using radar about 8 p.m. Wednesday when they clocked a Genesis traveling 52 mph in a 35-mph zone in the 1700 block of West Innes Street, the report said.

When an officer spoke with the driver, identified as Nguyen, he said he smelled marijuana. He asked her if she had any drugs and she produced a Ziploc bag containing 15 grams of marijuana from her purse. Also in her purse was cash and a digital scale.

During a search of the car, the officer found THC gummies, more plastic bags and cash.

Nguyen was released from the Rowan County Detention Center under a $20,000 secured bond.
