Area Sports: Childress, Richards compete in Carolinas Amateur golf

In the 105th Carolinas Amateur Golf Championship at Governors Club in Chapel Hill, Ben Woodruff of Huntersville took the lead on Thursday with a first-round 66.
Woodruff had five birdies, an eagle and only one bogey to grab a two-shot lead.
Salisbury’s Michael Childress shot 1-under 71 and is tied for 15th. while former South Rowan standout Davis Richards shot 1-over 73.
Little League softball
Rowan Little League’s 10U softball all-stars lost to Lake Norman 14-13 on Thursday at New Market Civitan Park in Sophia.
Rowan scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth, but the comeback came up short. It was Rowan’s second close loss to Lake Norman.
Lake Norman won the state championship.
Leah Troutman had three hits for Rowan. Getting two hits apiece for Rowan were Kimberly Troublefield, Jordan Drye, Leisha Carter, Allison Peeler, Chelsee Coughenour and Caroline Lyerly .
Legion softball
Tali Hagler and Anna Blume led Kannapolis to a sweep of Concord on Wednesday.
Hagler struck out eight in a 3-1 win. Blume, a South Rowan graduate, had a two-run double.
Kannapolis won the second game, 5-4.
Concord coaches
Brian Lytton, a West Rowan graduate and former North Rowan girls basketball coach, has been hired as Concord’s new girls basketball coach.
Lytton will teach math at Concord.

Hickory Ridge jayvee coach Cory Childress was hired as Concord’s new head baseball coach.
Legion baseball
Evan McGee’s infield hit in the bottom of the seventh gave Concord a 9-8 win against Mocksville on Thursday.
Concord stayed alive in the series with the win. Mocksville leads 2-1 and plays at home tonight.
Joey Szvetitz and Jacob Campbell had two hits each for Mocksville.
Brett Laws homered for Concord. McGee, Laws, Ick Cirino, Maven Parker and Jake Rowden had two hits for Post 51.

High Point finished a sweep of its series with Eastern Randolph with a 5-3 win at Finch Field on Thursday.
Isaiah Hairston homered, Luke Pritchett had three hits and two RBIs, and Gavin Sentell pitched a complete game.

Easton Morgan swung a hot bat for Randolph County in a 9-5 win against Stanly County on Thursday at McCrary Park.
Randolph swept the three-game series and ended Stanly’s season.
