Area Sports Briefs: Rowan Little League 10s head to state; Carson, West win Jr. Legion games on Monday

Rowan Little League softball’s 10U all-stars won the District 2 championship on Sunday.

Rowan rolled 16-0 against East Surry in the championship game.

 Next, Rowan will play in the state tournament that starts on July 6 at  New Market Civitan Park in Sophia.

Women’s basketball

Livingstone College will hold a press conference Friday to announce a  new women’s basketball coach.

Fishing

Boater Martin Villa of Charlottesville, Va., won Saturday’s T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League   Piedmont Division tournament on High Rock Lake after catching a five-bass limit weighing 20 pounds, 10 ounces.

Villa won $3,932.

Local tennis

Local players Ben Childress and Lacy Waggoner were winners in the Statesville Crossroads USTA Level 4 tournament played over the weekend.

Cannon School’s Childress won 6-4, 6-0 in the boys 16U championship. West Rowan’s Waggoner won 6-2, 6-1 in the girls 16U division.

Local golf

The North & South Amateur starts today in Pinehurst.

Local golfers Nick Lyerly and Michael Childress are in the field.

Locals Charlie Barr, Hank Robins, and Will Fowler played in the Webb Simpson Challenge at Mid Pines in Pinehurst.

Barr shot 73-77 – 150 to win the tournament. Robins shot 73-81 – 154 to finish second. Fowler shot 79-82 – 171.

The North Carolina Junior Boys Championship  is set for June 25-28 at the Lonnie Poole Golf Club in Raleigh.

Local entries include Barr (Cannon School, Class of 2021), Robins (Salisbury, Class of 2020) and Austin Miller (East Rowan, Class of 2020).

The McCanless Couples played a Captains Choice on Sunday.

The winning team was Ralph & Pam Craver, Calvin Smith and Walt Kincaid.

Taking second place was the team of  Harry Owen and David & Azalee Huneycutt.

  Debbie Ingleston won longest putt.

Junior Legion

  Calen Lawson had three hits for West Rowan in Monday’s 14-4 win against A.L. Brown.

Lane Adkins and Ben Sweet had two hits each, while Andrew Kennerly and Noah Loeblein drove in two each.

Mocksville beat Salisbury 7-2 on Sunday.

Blake Little and Justin Collins had two RBIs each to back strong pitching by Ethan Wilkins and Vance Visser.

South Rowan won 9-3 against Carson on Sunday.

 Drew Huffman hit a two-run homer  for South and had three RBIs.  Jackson Deal also had three RBIs.

Deal and Luke Hiskey did the pitching for South.

Ryan Street hit a two-run homer for Carson.

Carson  won 11-1 on Monday against Kannapolis Post 115.

Caden Hudson drove in three runs, while Dylan Driver and Aaron Bradshaw went 3-for-3.

Winning pitcher Tate Green struck out six. Dylan Valley got the save.

East catcher Tristan Miller threw out two base stealers in the seventh.

Jackson May hit a two-run homer for Kernersville in a 4-2 win against High Point on Monday.

Homers by Nick Leonard and Colby Guy led Stokes County to a 12-2 win against Eastern Randolph on Monday.

Randolph County beat Davidson County 8-3 on Monday.

Bryson Hamlet pitched six strong innings for Randolph, and Spencer Lanier knocked in three runs.

Landon Hilbourn had three hits for Davidson Post 8, and Noah Coleman homered.

 Stanly County routed Mooresville 11-1 on Saturday.

Cody Kidd was the winning pitcher. Hunter Sells homered.

Concord won 9-5 against  Lexington, S.C., on Sunday.

Evan McGee scored three runs, and Ick Cirino had two hits for Post 51.

Concord hosts Rowan County in a big game tonight at Mount Pleasant High.

 Drew Wright pitched a complete game for Post 8. Carson Simpson went 4-for-4.

Connor Murphy had  two RBIs for Post 81. Mason Canoy and Cade Snotherly had two hits each.

High Point scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh to beat Stokes County 6-5.

Avery Cain had a walk-off, two-run double for Post 85.

 Nick Leonard homered for Stokes County.

Beach volleyball

Tori Hester (West Rowan) and partner Madie Lichty won the AAU National Qualifier at Liberty University.

Minor league baseball

Recently promoted by Chicago to the Triple-A Iowa Cubs, Craig Brooks (Catawba) was the winning pitcher on Saturday night. Brooks is 2-0 on the season with a 1.67 ERA and 51 strikeouts.

Ike Freeman (East Rowan) went 3-for-3 on Saturday. Freeman is batting .357 for one of Cleveland’s entries in the Arizona Rookie League.
