Area Sports: Tough night for Intimidators

KANNAPOLIS— Mason Martin hit a two-run home run and had two hits, and Osvaldo Bido allowed just four hits over seven innings as the Greensboro Grasshoppers topped the Kannapolis Intimidators 4-0 on Saturday.
Bido (7-4) picked up the win after he struck out seven.
In the first inning, Greensboro took a 2-0 lead on a home run by Martin that scored Lolo Sanchez. The Grasshoppers scored again in the ninth when Connor Kaiser hit a solo home run and Patrick Dorrian hit an RBI double.
Jonathan Stiever (4-6) went five innings, allowing two runs and five hits while striking out five in the South Atlantic League game.
The Intimidators were held scoreless for the fourth time this season, while the Grasshoppers’ staff recorded their ninth shutout of the year.
Local golf
Salisbury’s Michael Childress (Cannon School, Richmond) has shot 70-70-71 — 211 and is in sixth place in the North Carolina Amateur Championship being played at Gaston Country Club.
The final round is today.

There’s a USGA Junior Amateur qualifier on Monday at the Country Club of Salisbury, and a Southern Amateur qualifier will be held there on Wednesday.
Legion softball
Members of the Rowan County Senior Lady Legion team are Mac Misenheimer, Ellen Yang, Kary Hales, Emily Davis, Cheyenne Barber, Maddie Trexler, Brooke Lowery, Ali Glover, Lonna Addison, Andrea Furr, Madison Anderson, Skyler Smith, Holly Stowe, Karsen Simpson, Madison Schroeder, Mackenzie Sprinkle, Aubrey Tuell and Abbey Nixon.
The team plays home games at East Rowan.

Rowan’s Junior team won against Davidson 8-0 and 2-1 to open the season.
In the first game, Phoebe Cole pitched a shutout.
Seven different players scored for Rowan. Grancianna Barber scored twice and had a 16-pitch at-bat that resulted in a single.
In the second game, Liberty Schroeder hit a sacrifice to score Maddie Roberts in the first inning and it turned out to be the winning run.
Eleni Miller pitched a complete game, and Rowan played great defemse.
Miller finished the game with a three-pitch inning.
Junior Legion
South Rowan won 5-0 against Kannapolis Post 115 on Friday.
Jackson Deal shut Kannapolis out for six innings.

East Rowan edged Carson 4-3 at Staton Field on Friday on a walk-off hit by McCall Henderson.
Griffin Warden homered for East. Tate Green was the winning pitcher. Chase Mako pitched five innings for East.
East moved to 4-0 in conference games.
Connor Rayfield, Ryan Street and Hunter Burris had two hits each for Carson.

Tristan Miller was the winning pitcher.
Green went 4-for-4 with five RBIs.
Cobb Hightower, Jacob Poston, Bryson Shive and Warden had two hits each.

Jonathan Conway struck out 11 as Davidson County (8-3, 3-0) beat Stokes County 4-1 on Saturday.

Cody Kidd pitched four shutout innings. Lukas Scott had two hits and three RBIs.

Dawson Davis pitched six shutout innings and Spencer Lanier drove in two runs as Randolph County beat Chapin-Newberry 7-0 in the NC/SC Challenge in Newberry, S.C.
The Challenge is 3-3 heading into Sunday’s games.

Hunter Hutchens and Jackson May homered for Kernersville, while Gage Smith homered and drove in five runs for Mooresville.
Little League softball
Rowan Little League’s 8U All-Stars beat Northwest Forsyth 22-0 on Saturday at Davie Little League.
Rowan beat East Surry 27-1 on Friday.
Rowan plays Davie on Sunday at 2 p.m.
Team members are Addison Barrier, Ava Baxter, Eevee Baxter, Peyton Cheek, Kallie Clawson, Kaylee Connor, Bently Hager, Remington Hagerty, Kenzie Melchor, Kaitlyn Moore, Peyton Mulkey, Cressley Patterson, Ashlyn Pfister and Tenley Shell.
Jeff Bernhardt is the manager. Assistant coaches are Nick Baxter, Josh Melchor, Brett Mulkey and McKenzie Wolford.
South Rowan Youth Baseball Camp
South Rowan Youth Baseball Camp is Monday through Thursday, June 17-20.
The camp is from 9 to 1 daily. Camp is for players who will be in grades 1-8.
The cost is $80.

College softball
Pfeiffer infielder Kasey Rowden announced that she’s transferring to Catawba for softball and will be seeking a nursing degree.
The former Central Cabarrus standout batted .333 for Pfeiffer in 2018. She played most of her games for the Falcons at second base but also can play in the outfield.
