Area Sports Briefs: West baseball falls in first round

GRANITE QUARRY — West Rowan lost to Cox Mill  on Saturday night in the first round of East Rowan’s Easter baseball tournament.

The  Chargers scored four runs in the top of the first, led all the way and took a 6-3 victory.

West got the tying run to  the plate in the bottom of the seventh, but Payne Stolsworth popped up a 3-and-2 pitch from Carson Burt to end the game.

Cox Mill (16-4) got three RBIs from Cam Lowke and two hits from C.J. Hassell.

Bailey Gentile pitched six innings for the win. Burt got the save.

Daniel Durham (4-3) pitched very well after the  first inning, but he took the loss for West (13-6).

Carsen Bailey had three of West’s seven hits. Daniel Sell, JT Fecteau and Steven Smith had RBIs for the Falcons. West got within 4-3 before Cox Mill tacked on two more runs in the top of the seventh.

West Stanly beat Central Cabarrus 7-3 in Saturday’s early game in East Rowan’s Easter tournament.

Michael Crayton pitched a complete game for the Colts (17-3). Trent Wilson hit a tie-breaking homer in the third.

Evan McGee, Jack Swan and Sam Yelton had two hits each for the Vikings (11-7).

In a wild Saturday afternoon game in East Rowan’s Easter tourney, Hickory Ridge outscored West Iredell, 20-13.

Ick Cirino went 4-for-4 with five RBIs for the Bulls (14-6).  Jacob Bishop had three hits and drove in four runs.

Eli Kitchens homered and drove in four for the Warriors (6-13).

Monday’s games

Game 5 — West Iredell vs. West Rowan, 10 a.m.

Game 6 — Hickory Ridge vs. Cox Mill, 1 p.m. (semifinal)

Game 7 — Forest Hills vs. C. Cabarrus, 4 p.m.

Game 8 — East Rowan vs. W. Stanly, 7 p.m. (semifinal)

Carson baseball

Carson starts play in the Intimidators Invitational in Kannapolis on Monday.

Carson (18-2) has the final game of the day at 6:30 p.m. against Northwest Cabarrus  (12-7).

Monday’s games

Game 1 — Mount Pleasant vs. Robinson, 11 a.m.

Game 2 — Weddington vs. Lake Norman, 1:30 p.m.

Game 3 — A.L. Brown vs. Piedmont, 4 p.m.

Game 4 — Carson vs. NW Cabarrus, 6:30 p.m.

HS softball

The Civitan Tournament  will be played at Salisbury  Community Park on April 25-26.

The field includes conference champs West Rowan and Central Cabarrus.

College softball

Catawba’s doubleheader scheduled for Saturday was postponed to Monday.

College tennis

Alexis Galarneau and Michael Ogden (Salisbury) defeated Wake Forest’s Alan Gojiev and Borna Gojo 6-4 in the ACC Championships on Saturday.

Intimidators

KANNAPOLIS —  Logan Sowers hit a run-scoring single in the sixth inning, leading the Kannapolis Intimidators to a 6-4 win over the Hagerstown Suns on Saturday.

With the victory, the Intimidators snapped a six-game losing streak.

The single by Sowers came in the midst of a five-run inning and tied the game 4-4. Later in the inning, Kannapolis took the lead when Ramon Beltre hit a two-run double.

Starter Kade McClure (1-0) got the win while Ryan Tapani (1-1) took the loss in relief in the South Atlantic League game.
