Area Sports Briefs: Catawba softball drops 2

Catawba’s softball team  was swept in a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader by  Newberry on Tuesday.

Catawba lost the first game 12-10 when Chelsey Cunningham hit a seventh-inning grand slam for the Wolves.

The Indians led 9-2 early.

Gracie  Gibson homered and drove in five runs for the Indians. Taylor Martin had three hits, while Kaylee Cook, Jordan Dean, Carlee Brawley and Allie Baker had two each. Dean drove in two. Martin, Dean, Baker and Sydney Goertzen scored two each.

Madison Hunter (9-7) took the loss.

• Catawba lost 5-2 in the second game despite a two-run homer in the seventh by Summer Howerton.

Brooke Walser (6-7) pitched a complete game but took the loss.

HS girls soccer

South Rowan won against Thomasville on Tuesday, 7-4.

Madison Henry scored five goals for the Raiders (4-11, 4-10).

Rhiannon Kimmer and  Ambar Hernandez also scored for South and had an assist.

   

College baseball

Holden Lanier (North Rowan) is the regular third baseman for Brevard.

He has six doubles and has knocked in nine runs.

Mid. school soccer

West Rowan’s girls beat Corriher Lipe 9-0.

Brittany Vanhoose had three goals and five assists for the Bulldogs (7-2).

Anna Mead had five goals. Jisel Suarez had a goal and an assist. Lilly Cuevas and Lynley Chandler had assists. West is now 7-2.

West’s boys defeated Corriher Lipe 6-1.

  Franco Reyes scored four goals for the Bulldogs (2-4-3). Andres Saucedo and Chris Pina scored a goal each.

Juan Pablo Ramon had two assists, while  Gio Romero and Chris Pina had one each
