Local YMCA swimmers earn third-place in Greensboro

GREENSBORO — The YMCA of Rowan County swim club members finished up their season with a third place finish at the Greater YMCA Sunbelt Swimming Association meet, for small YMCA teams in North Carolina.

Forty-eight swimmers from Rowan County, ages 6-18, represented the Rowan Aquatic Club Y (RAC) team at the Greensboro Aquatic Center, participating in events ranging from 50 yards to one-mile swims and multiple relay teams.

Points were awarded for top 16 finishes and several strong relays from the Rowan 10-and-under boys and 11-12 and 13-and-older girls made a big impact.

 Following the event, 16 swimmers qualified for an additional meet and traveled to the Upper Southeast Regional YMCA championship in Duncan, S.C. Rowan senior girls achieved medals in both the 200- and 400-yard girls relay events, as well as multiple top eight finishes from Rachel Gibson, Christopher Kafitz, Ava Morris, Calista Erhart and seniors Olivia Shorter and Meghan Krol.

Rowan YMCA swimmers are ages 4-18 and practice together in training guided by certified and experienced USA Swimming and YMCA coaches at the J.F. Hurley Family YMCA in Salisbury, and also team opportunities at the YMCA’s in China Grove and Rockwell.

YMCA swimming welcomes children of all ages and abilities year round. RAC strives to help children grow through goals in swimming for self-improvement, teamwork and life. SWIM TEAM IS BEGINNING THIRD YEAR
J.F. Hurley Family YMCA’s summer swim team is starting its third year and is already making waves in the Southern Piedmont Swim Conference.
The Salisbury Cyclones will be led again this year by coach Candace Frambs, a coach with many years of summer race team coaching experience and a specialization in developing technique in swimmers.
The team is open to any child 5-18 years of age and they swim May through July at both the Country Club of Salisbury and the JF. Hurley Family YMCA.
Hannah Hawkins, YMCA of Rowan County swim team head coach, is excited by the progress of the Salisbury Cyclones.
“In just two seasons, the Salisbury summer team grew from 30 to over 60 children, who took their love of splashing around in the summer to immensely improving their swimming skills — and having a great time being part of this YMCA values centered program,” said Hawkins. “Coach Candace is wonderful at guiding new or young swimmers and helping them learn and be great teammates.
“The best thing about the swim team is seeing children who start out as quite nervous or not strong swimmers, and by the end of the season, they make huge strides in every way,” continued Hawkins. “Our reward as coaches is complete, when parents are excited that their child gained great swimming skills, and that on the journey, they found self-confidence and motivation that translates to all aspects of their life.”
