Area Sports Briefs: Carson baseball holds off South

LANDIS — Carson held off  a furious South Rowan rally in the seventh inning and won Monday’s non-conference baseball matchup, 8-5.

Cole Hales relieved in the seventh and got a strikeout on a 3-and-2 pitch to end the game with Raiders at second and third.

Carson (3-1) scored twice in the first inning and led all the way. It was 8-1 going to the bottom of the seventh, when the Raiders (2-3) were able to make things interesting.

Logan Rogers had a triple and drove in two runs to lead Carson’s offense. Zeb Burns had the early two-run single that put the Cougars on top.

Hales and Garrett Alewine also had RBIs.

Carson had eight hits.

Carson’s Deacon Wike (2-0) pitched four strong innings and fanned nine. Ryan Street struck out five in two innings of relief work.

South had six hits. Nathan Chrismon had two hits, while Eli Hiskey scored twice.

Jarrid Nelson, Andrew Jones, Andrew Furr and Bryson Bebber had RBIs.

Eli Hiskey (0-1) pitched into the fifth inning for the Raiders.

South Rowan plays a league game at North Davidson tonight.

TYRO — Drew Wright pitched a two-hitter to lead West Davidson to a 1-0 Central Carolina Conference win against Salisbury on Monday.

Bo Rusher and Blaine Shellhorn had the only hits for the Hornets (4-1, 3-1).

Max Crawford (0-1) pitched well for four innings but took the loss. Parker Lippard and Rusher also hurled for the Hornets.

Austin Musgrave drove in the only run of the game in the first inning.

Evan McGee fired a one-hitter with 14 strikeouts as Central Cabarrus beat Concord on Monday in South Piedmont Conference action, 1-0.

HS soccer

Sydney Borst scored three goals and Hannah Isley had two as Carson rallied to beat Central Cabarrus in a non-conference match, 5-4, on Monday.

Ryley Corriher made seven saves for West Rowan in Monday’s 4-0 non-conference loss to A.l. Brown.

HS softball

In non-conference softball on Monday, West Rowan won against Lake Norman, 7-5.

The Falcons got strong pitching from Whitley Arnott (eight strikeouts). She pitched into the sixth, and  Taylor Walton, was able to finish the win.

Mary Sobataka homered. Walton had three hits and three RBIs. Reagan Haggas and Hannah Pratt had two hits each. KK Dowling had a double.

Mooresville scored in the bottom of the seventh to beat Hough on Monday, 7-6.

Caitlin Mann hit a home run for the Blue Devils. Raiven Osborne drove in the winning run.

HS tennis

Salisbury stayed undefeated with a 9-0 win against Oak Grove in Central Carolina Conference action on Monday.

Salisbury (4-0, 4-0) got singles wins from Roarke Burton, Sean Archer, Ethan McGee, Jander Rodas-Palacios, Leo Schiavinato and Juan Salazar.

Sweeping doubles were the teams of Burton/Archer, McGee/Schiavinato and Rodas-Palacios/Salazar.

North Rowan edged East Rowan in non-conference tennis on Monday, 5-4.

North (2-2)  got singles wins from Hans Roemer,  J.D. Hager and Ray Montes.  Winning in doubles for the Cavs were Roemer/Hager and Arizona Day/Garrett Jennings.

Carson lost to Hickory Ridge on Monday in a non-conference match, 5-4.

Nathaniel Kimball won in singles for the Cougars.

In doubles Jacob Horner/Cameron Dunn, Avery Paschal/Ethen Fesperman and Kimball/Thomas Bost  were winners for Carson.

Carson opens North Piedmont Conference play at home today against North Iredell.

SPC basketball

In the South Piedmont Conference, Concord’s Jason Stowe was named coach of the year for boys basketball.

Cox Mill’s Wendell Moore Jr. was chosen as the player of the year.

A.L. Brown’s Amare Haynie, Amari Grier and Kheni Briggs made All-SPC.

Central Cabarrus took the top girls honors, with Brandon Blalock named coach of the year, and Jael Miller named player of the year.

A.L. Brown’s Jala Campbell and Jaliyah Simmons were named All-SPC.

NPC wrestling

West Rowan’s John Brown was named North Piedmont Conference Coach of the Year for wrestling after leading West Rowan to the championship.

North Iredell’s Chandler Jordan was voted player of the year by the league’s coaches.

West’s Mike Molenda, D.J. Robinson, Gavin Coffield, Alex Erazo and Baiden Suddarth made All-NPC.

East Rowan’s Oren Bost, Stephen Deutsch and Tayron Frost made All-NPC, along with Carson’s Josh Vega, Drew Magnuson, Drake Cadle, Noah Basinger and Josh McCurry.

College golf

MONROE —  Catawba is in seventh place after the first two rounds of the Hargett Memorial Men’s Golf Tournament. The three-round tournament is being held at the 6,904-yard, par-72 Stonebridge Golf Club.

Catawba is playing its B team at the event.

College tennis

Catawba’s men’s team (8-3) knocked off Lincoln Memorial, 5-2,

to win its South Atlantic Conference men’s tennis opener on Monday at the Johnson Tennis Center.

Hurricanes AAU

The Rowan Hurricanes AAU travel basketball program is holding a parent interest meeting on Thursday, March 14m at  Christ United Methodist Church (3401Mooresvill Road, Salisbury) for a  6th/7th grade boys travel team.

Local golf

The McCanless Couples finally had a Sunday with good weather.

Walt Kincaid,  Terrol Kendall and Pam& Ralph Carver won the day.

Team Seaford, Susan Wydner and David Huneycutt took second place.

Kendall had the longest putt.
