SALISBURY — “Marsabit: Kenya’s Hidden Treasure” will be the topic of a presentation at the Center for the Environment at Catawba College at 6:30 p.m. March 14 in Room 300.

Alberto Borges of Nairobi, Kenya, is an environmental explorer and founder of the Explorer’s Club of Kenya, a nonprofit society that aims to explore and conserve little-known places in East Africa. Borges will discuss his exploration, research and conservation of remote northern Kenya.

At the age of 15, Borges conducted his first project along the Thika River in Kenya. From there, he went on to explore Kenya’s largest yet least studied region, Marsabit County. While photographing the region, his work introduced him to his next research focus — the “strikingly beautiful, golden-haired” camel spider.

In 2016, Borges was awarded National Geographic Explorer status for his research on camel spiders in northern Kenya. In 2017, he gave a TED talk at the Africa Idea Search conference in Nairobi. In 2018, he was awarded honorary membership in the Scientific Exploration Society in the United Kingdom.

His upcoming summer projects in Kenya include leading a climate change workshop and tree planting in local communities on the slopes of Mount Marsabit. He will also lead a 620-kilometer scientific expedition along Athi River with a team of young scientists as they assess how wastewater being dumped in the river is affecting local communities and ecosystems downstream.

Borges enjoys working with fellow youths to create environmental awareness through his club’s e-magazine, The Explorer.

Borges is pursuing a bachelor of science degree in environment and sustainability with a minor in biology and a double concentration in natural resource management and outdoor environmental education at Catawba College.
