SALISBURY — A 6-month-old boy from Lexington died Tuesday after he was attacked by a dog at a home in Salisbury, police said.
Jacari Long died Tuesday after being taken to Novant Health Rowan Medical Center and then airlifted to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
Jacari was attacked by a boxer-pitbull mix after being left in the living room of a home in the 700 block of Wilson Road, according to the Salisbury Police Department.
Police said they were notified that a child was being airlifted to Winston-Salem at 2:29 p.m. Tuesday.
Officers determined that the attack happened at the home of the boy’s babysitter, whom police did not name. Police said the babysitter sat the child in the living room of her house and walked outside to clean the back seat of her car so she and the child could leave.
A news release from the Police Department said the sitter heard her mother scream and ran back into the Wilson Road house. The babysitter found the boy being attacked by her dog, police said.
Rowan County Animal Control took custody of the dog. A news release said Salisbury police are still investigating and that no further information would be released Tuesday evening.
