SALISBURY — A man was stabbed and drove himself to the hospital in a weekend altercation that turned violent.

Salisbury Police Department officers were called to 420 S. Ellis St. late Saturday night for a breaking and entering in progress. They found two people involved in an altercation at the residence.

William John Hohenstein, 47, was stabbed once in the chest but was able to drive himself to Novant Health Rowan Medical Center. His injuries were not life-threatening, police said.

Hohenstein said sometime before 10 p.m., he and Eric Singer, 71, got into a confrontation. Police said they believe Hohenstein punched Singer, then Singer grabbed a nearby kitchen knife and stabbed Hohenstein.

Hohenstein told police he fell on the kitchen knife.

Police continue to investigate. No arrest has been made.
