Carson boys

STATESVILLE – Carson’s boys basketball team may have ended its season on Wednesday with an 82-72 loss to South Iredell in a North Piedmont Conference semifinal played at Statesville.

Free throws were the story. Second-seeded South Iredell shot 46, while third-seeded Carson shot 15. That’s tough to overcome.

“They were attacking, but we were doing a pretty job of attacking the basket too,” Carson coach Brian Perry said. “That was our game plan. Really space it out hit the gaps and drive it.”

At halftime, South Iredell led 31-27.

“Then they shot a ton of free throws in the third quarter, and I got a technical,” Perry said. “We were just in terrible foul trouble all night. There were some calls that were just tough to swallow.”

EJ Clark, AJ Jackson, Cole Perry and Mark Spry fouled out.

“I thought we really battled hard in spite of everything that went wrong,” Coach Perry said.

Carson got huge games from Cole Perry (25 points), Javon Smith (23) and AJ Mauldin (20), but only four Cougars scored.

Cole Hales, finally back at full strength after an ankle injury and bouts with the flue and bronchitis, played well also.

Carson (13-12) has been awarded a forfeit victory over North Iredell for the first-round tournament game that wasn’t played, but the Cougars, like the East Rowan girls, are on the bubble now. They won’t know their fate as far as the playoffs until pairings and seeds are released on Saturday.

South Iredell (16-7) got 18 points each from Austin Edds and Greg Liechty. Liechty made 12 free throws. Ty Everhart added 17.

South Iredell advanced to play Statesville in Friday’s championship game.
