Catawba athletics: Baseball sweeps, plays today at 1 p.m.

SALISBURY — Weather shook up the schedule for Catawba’s weekend baseball series, but the Indians kept right on winning.

Catawba beat Shippensburg 13-1 and 4-3 on Friday to take the first two games of a three-game series.

The teams will finish the series today at Newman Park at 1 p.m..

Catawba (10-1) has won nine straight.

Jeremy Simpson (West Rowan) went 5-for-9 in Friday’s twin bill as Catawba improved to 7-0 at Newman Park. He had the game-winning hit as the Indians rallied in Game 2.

Lee Poteat (West Rowan) returned from an injury and had three hits in the opener.

Hunter Shepherd (Homeschool Stallions) hit his fourth homer of the young season and was the winning pitcher. He worked into the seventh inning.

Jackson Raper homered. Joe Butts tripled.

Riley Myers (Salisbury) pitched into the sixth inning of the nightcap. Reliever Greg Brown won it. Peyton Williams saved it.

 

Basketball

Catawba is at home this afternoon for a SAC doubleheader against Carson-Newman.

The women’s game is at 2 p.m., while the men’s game is at 4 p.m.

 

Softball

WILSON — Catawba split a doubleheader at Barton on Friday afternoon at Jeffries Field.

Catawba (7-3) won the first game, 7-2, behind the pitching of Preston Ellenberg.

Ellenberg and Allie Baker hit home runs. Carlee Brawley had two hits and drove in a run.

Catawba dropped the second game, wasting some fine pitching by Brooke Walser.

The Indians were held to four hits and lost 1-0.

Catawba is home on Tuesday, hosting Belmont Abbey in a 1 p.m.doubleheader.

 

Men’s lacrosse

 SALISBURY —  The Catawba men’s lacrosse team fell to 15th-ranked Mount Olive on Friday afternoon at Shuford Stadium.

Freshman Christian Norrie led Catawba with three goals.  Kevin Geiger stopped 17 shots for the Indians (0-2).
