GOLD HILL — A Salisbury man is charged with causing a Tuesday morning crash, then running from the scene.

The N.C. Highway Patrol says 26-year-old Tennessee James Powell was charged Wednesday with failure to remain or render aid at the scene of a crash; driving while license revoked; resisting or obstructing an officer; displaying a fictitious registration plate; and having no operator’s insurance.

The two-vehicle collision occurred about 10 a.m. at the intersection of Old Beatty Ford Road and Old U.S. 80, off U.S. 52 in Gold Hill.

Powell was driving a tan Kia Sorrento east on Old U.S. 80. The driver of a Honda was traveling west on Old Beatty Ford Road.

Powell made a turn, and the two vehicles collided. It’s unclear whether Powell was trying to turn around in the road and struck the oncoming vehicle, Trooper C.J. Doty said Tuesday.

Powell ran from the vehicle and caught a ride with an employee of nearby Stalite who didn’t know he had fled the scene of an accident. The employee took Powell to the Post Office on U.S. 52.

A passenger in the car with Powell refused medical treatment as did the driver of the second vehicle.

Powell was released from the Rowan County Detention Center under a $10,000 secured bond.
