SALISBURY — From a natural gas truck manufacturer to new hotels, the list of businesses opened in Rowan County during the last four years is wide-ranging.

Last year during an October candidates forum, Commissioners Chairman Greg Edds said 57 new and expanded retail and service or manufacturing businesses and more than 20 new restaurants had opened in the previous four years — the first term in office for Edds, Commissioners Vice Chairman Jim Greene and Commissioner Judy Klusman.

A reader submitted a question to the Salisbury Post asking for the names of the businesses to which Edds was referring during the October forum.

In providing the list to the Post, Edds said there are likely other businesses he did not count. It was created, in part, using information from the Rowan County Chamber of Commerce, he said.

The total number of businesses on the list is 86, including 18 under a section labeled “economic development,” 48 in a “retail and service” section and 20 restaurants. Some of the businesses represent expansions rather than an entirely new business. Others are relocations. The list provided by Edds last week also includes some businesses that have opened since he made the statement.
