SALISBURY — A local man was charged with possession of marijuana and cocaine after he was stopped because his rear taillight was not on, the Salisbury Police Department said.

David Leon Simpson, 37, was charged Tuesday with felony possession of a controlled substance Schedule II and simple possession of marijuana.

Police officers said they stopped Simpson’s vehicle in the 500 block of North Clay Street and a police dog smelled drugs. An officer found 0.04 grams of cocaine in the center console, and Simpson handed over a black container with 1.2 grams of marijuana inside, police said.

Simpson was released from the Rowan County Detention Center under a $5,000 secured bond.
