On Sunday, February 18, 1938, the members of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority and Phi Beta Sigma met at the Center Library, to discuss chartering graduate chapters. Again on Friday, March 25, 1938 the same organizations met at the home of the late Joseph Duncan to discuss the previous business.

April 14, 1938, Alpha Alpha Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated was chartered at the home of the late Ida Duncan. The chartered members of Alpha Alpha Zeta were Ida Hauser Duncan, Ruth Miller Gore, Myrtle Peak McGarity, Myrtle Stewart Pemberton, Lottie Smith Whittington, and Pauline Bennett Wright. Lottie S. Whittington served as our first chapter president.

During the early years, the ladies of Alpha Alpha Zeta had backyard Tea Parties, at the home of Lottie S. Whittington. These Tea Parties were formal tea parties.

We have had several women, in Alpha Alpha Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated to hold state, regional, and national offices. Triumphant Soror Augusta White served as the 1st NC State Director and the 6th Eastern Regional Director. Triumphant Soror Vera Moore Jones served as the 7th NC State Director and the 12th Eastern Regional Director. Soror Joann P. Diggs served as the NC State Tamias. Soror Jylla Moore Tearte served as the 20th International President. Soror Crystal Kelly currently serves as the NC Marketing and Publications Coordinator.

Alpha Alpha Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated has been honored to present hundreds of young ladies to society in our Annual Debutante Ball. Our Annual Debutante is our way to assist high school students with scholarships to further their education.

We participate in several service projects that support our national initiatives. Some of these service projects are feeding the homeless at Rowan Helping Ministries, going to the Brian to spend time with the elderly as part of our Eldercare Initiative, and donating personal care items to the W. G. (Bill) Hefner VA Medical Center. This is our way of showing our appreciation to our community as well as the many men and women who have sacrificed themselves for us.

The women of Alpha Alpha Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated are very passionate about our Adopt-A-School Initiative. We adopted Elizabeth Duncan Koontz Elementary School in 2006. Koontz is named after our honorary member. Elizabeth Duncan Koontz served as the National Advisory Council on the Education of Disadvantaged Children under President Lyndon B Johnson. Also, Mrs. Koontz headed the Women’s Bureau of the United States Department of Labor at the request of President Richard M. Nixon. She was an avid activist for education. We support the school by donating warm items to students, a girl’s book club, and other acts of kindness throughout the school year.

Finer Womanhood and Sisterly Love go hand in hand. We are finer because of the Proverbs 31 characteristics that we possess. We are sisterly because of the kinship that unite us through Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated. Alpha Alpha Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated promotes Finer Womanhood and Sisterly Love throughout the year as well. We have sisterhood teas, Pumps and Pearls Networking events, and Zeta of the month, just to name a few things.

Give her the fruits of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates. Proverbs 31:31

For 80 years, Alpha Alpha Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated has stood proud on the shoulders of our 5 Pearls: Arizona Cleaver Stemons, Pearl Anna Neal, Myrtle Tyler Faithful, Viola Tyler Goings, and Fannie Pettie Watts as well as our elustrous charter members.
