AARP January meeting
The meeting is at Rufty-Holmes Senior Center at 1 p.m. on Jan. 3 with guest speaker Mandy Flores, Program Director, Guardian Ad Litem. She holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Ga. State in 2005 and worked in the Mecklenburg County clerk’s office for nine years before accepting her current position as Guardian Ad Litem.

 

Martin Luther King 33rd National Holiday Observance

THOMASVILLE — The Martin Luther King Social Action Committee (MLK-SAC) announces the itinerary for the 2019 Martin Luther King National Holiday celebration in Thomasville Jan. 13-21.
It is the 33rd anniversary of the King national holiday and the 18th anniversary of the weeklong local event. The local theme is “Walking in Excellence.”

Recipients of the 2019 MLK Community Service Awards are Deanna D. Geter, retired teacher and coach from Thomasville High School and Kevin L. Leake, principal of Thomasville Middle School.
–The 18th MLK Awards Dinner and Oratorical Contest will be held at Rich Fork Baptist Church at 6 p.m. on Jan. 19. Fox 8 News anchor Natalie Wilson will serve as mistress of ceremonies.
MLK-SAC will give more than $13,000 in scholarships and trophies in 2019. High school juniors and seniors from the Piedmont Triad region will participate in the oratorical contest that provides money for college.
–The 18th annual MLK Invitational Dance concert will be held at Citadel of Faith Christian Fellowship Jan. 13 at 5 p.m., free to the public.
–The MLK Holiday Concert featuring vocal sensation Virginia Rush is Jan. 20 at 5 p.m.

Sunday, Jan. 20
MLK Holiday Concert – 5 p.m. with vocal sensation Virginia Rush, Citadel of Faith Christian Fellowship, free admission

Monday, Jan. 21
MLK Community Prayer Breakfast – 8 a.m., sponsored by Theta Eta Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta, Citadel of Faith Christian Fellowship

MLK Community Health Fair – 9 a.m. Novant Health Thomasville Medical Center, Old Lexington Road, sponsored by Novant Health TMC & MLK-SAC
