January healthy living classes at Rufty-Holmes Center

Rufty-Holmes Senior Center is offering two workshops for people with Type 2 diabetes or chronic pain and a class in tai-chi for arthritis. The workshops are free, thanks to a Health Promotion Disease Prevention Grant.

The tai chi class is $10 for the 10-session series. The class size is small, and registration is required. Call 704-216-7714 to sign up.

• Living Healthy With Diabetes: 2-4:30 p.m. Mondays, Jan. 7-28 and Feb. 4-18. The workshop is for those who have Type 2 diabetes or are living with someone with the disease. Participants will learn self-management skills for healthier eating and physical activity.

• Living Healthy With Chronic Pain: 2-4:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Jan. 22-29 and Feb. 5-26. The workshop is for those who have chronic pain or are living with someone with chronic pain. Participants will earn to manage pain and depression symptoms and deal with emotions using breathing and muscle relaxation techniques.

• Tai Chi for Arthritis: 8:30 a.m. Monday and Wednesday starting Jan. 23. This is a safe and easy-to-learn program to help relieve pain and improve health, balance and flexibility. The class offers additional benefits of improving posture and increasing relaxation. The 10-session series is $10.
