Area Sports Briefs: Rymer, Wonders strong in indoor track

South Rowan freshman Bethany Rymer shined in the High School Kickoff Meet held at the JDL track in Winston-Salem.

Rymer placed 12th in the 1000 meters in 3:25.75.

In the 1600, she placed eighth in 5:24.94. She was the fastest freshman in the race and qualified for the state championship meet.

Rymer had a great cross country season in the fall and was the Post’s female runner of the year. She’s also standing out now for the  South Rowan basketball team.

A.L. Brown’s Jalen Neal took second place in the 300 meters in the Kickoff meet.  Neal ran 35.51.

A.L. Brown’s Gabe Blackwelder was 12th in the 1600 in 4:57.58.

A.L. Brown’s boys 4×800 relay team took fourth place  in 8:45.21.

College soccer

Eight South Atlantic Conference student-athletes have been named to the  United Soccer Coaches Women’s Scholar All-South Region team, including  Catawba junior defender Peyton Pruitt.

Pruitt has a 3.92 GPA in integrated marketing communications.

Alumni game

A  Carson vs. South Rowan alumni basketball fundraising game will be played Jan. 5 at Carson.

Girls and boys  gams will be played. Rosters are being put together now.  Carson’s roster will include the school’s all-time scoring leader Darius Moose.
