Sixth annual Bonsai exhibition coming to NCRC

KANNAPOLIS — Bonsai hobbyists, gardeners, and art lovers all can enjoy the beauty of these small trees when bonsai artists and vendors from all over the USA will display their trees at The Winter Silhouette Bonsai Show.
For the sixth year, bonsai artists from all over the USA will show their bonsai trees in the atrium of the North Carolina Research Campus, 150 N Research Campus Drive.
Free bonsai demos/lessons will be held each day at 10 10 a.m and at 1 p.m. Famous bonsai masters will teach these demos (William Valavanis from New York, Rodney Clemons from Georgia, Owen Reich from Tennessee, and Tyler Sherrod from North Carolina). At 5: p.m. Saturday there will be a bonsai auction open to all.

NC History: Catawba County and the 1944 Polio Epidemic

In “NC History: Catawba County and the 1944 Polio Epidemic,” Richard Eller examines the effect of the polio epidemic on post-WWII Catawba County. Eller and Robert Canipe co-edited the essay collection “Polio, Pitchforks and Perseverance,” published in 2016.
Eller, a history professor at Catawba Valley Community College, also contributed an essay to the collection. The project also generated “Miracle: How a North Carolina County Named Catawba Battled Polio and Won,” a 55-minute documentary by CVCC faculty and the college’s service community.
Copies of the book and DVD will bea available for purchase.

Salisbury Symphony Guild presents ‘A Cocktail Cabaret’

Does the Salisbury Symphony Guild support the Salisbury Symphony? You can bet on it! And, you can do that easily on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2019, when the Guild hosts “A Cocktail Cabaret With International Casino.”
The Crystal Ballroom at Catawba College will be transformed into a casino, beckoning Salisbury’s high rollers (and wannabes) to test their luck at gaming tables (think Baccarat, blackjack, etc.), savor international cuisine, and sway to sparkling Cabaret-style entertainment (dueling pianos, anyone?).
Plus, there will be door prizes and a chance to win a trip to a real high-end casino (location to be revealed).

The ticket price of $100 per person (tax included) includes $2,000 in “play” money and two drink tickets. (What a great idea for a stocking stuffer!) Paper winnings can be used for multiple prizes. The Salisbury Symphony Guild invites you to share in the “fun” of “fundraising.”
