SALISURY— The Rowan County Christmas Bureau has extended its application process until Saturday.

People who are in need of help getting gifts for children this holiday season can apply from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Hurley Family YMCA.

The bureau accepts applications on behalf of three programs to help agencies avoid duplicating applicants and to streamline the application process. Most of the programs are for children 12 and younger.

The organizations that receive applications through the Christmas Bureau are:

• Salvation Army Angel Tree, which allows donors to choose tags with a list of each child’s needs or wishes. The donor then purchases the items and drops them off at the Salvation Army.

• The Salisbury Post Christmas Happiness Fund gives eligible parents and guardians a voucher to do the gift shopping themselves for their children’s Christmas. Post readers and others drop off donations to pay for the vouchers at the newspaper’s offices.

• Project Santa is based at First Baptist Church of Denton and provides toys for school-age children, clothing and food to families in need on Christmas Eve.

Volunteers will accept applicants Saturday at J.F. Hurley Family YMCA, 828 W. Jake Alexander Blvd.

Those applying for help should bring the following records:

• Birth certificates for all children 12 and younger.

• The applicant’s driver’s license or other photo identification, along with guardianship papers if the applicant is not a parent.

• If no current ID is available, bring a lease and utility bill.

• Up-to-date Medicaid card for each child.

• Proof of all income and expenses, food and nutrition program voucher and/or unemployment benefits letter.

The Salvation Army and Hurley YMCA are United Way partner agencies.
