Area Sports Briefs: North football moved up to Wednesday

North Rowan’s  Yadkin Valley Conference  football game at North Moore has been moved up to Wednesday at 7 p.m. due to weather concerns.

A win would give the Cavaliers a 9-2 overall record and a 6-1 league mark.

Jayvee football

Noah Loeblein threw TD passes to Ben Sweet and Caleb Brawley to lead West Rowan to a 24-12 win against South Iredell on Monday.

Akin Robinson had a rushing score for the Falcons. Nathan Estrada had an interception return for a touchdown.

College commitments

Carson’s Mikaila Gadson committed to UNC Wilmington’s track and field program.

Gadson won county championships last spring in the 200 and 400 and ran on the winning 4×200 team. She was second in the 100.

As a junior, she was the Post’s female athlete of the year for track and field.

Bo Rusher

Salisbury’s Bo Rusher committed to Gardner-Webb’s baseball program.

Rusher batted .430 for the Hornets as a junior, with  three homers, 31 RBIs and 33 runs scored.

Rusher is a l90-pound  lefty swinger who catches and plays the outfield.

He was all-county as a sophomore and junior and has been All-Central Carolina Conference three straight years.

Rusher has played well for the South Charlotte Panthers travel team.

High school soccer

Salisbury hosts Morganton Patton in a 2A second-round match tonight.

A.L. Brown hosts Ashevill Erwin in a 3A matchup.

Men’s soccer

Tusculum, Queens and SAC tournament champ Tusculum are in the field for the regional.

Women’s soccer

Catawba’s   Bailey Howell and   Katie Beck made the SAC all-tournament team.

Catatawba lost to Carson-Newman in a tournament semifinal, 2-1. Howell scored the Catawba goal.

Carson-Newman, tournament champ Lincoln Memorial and Catawba are in the regional.

Catawba is seeded seventh and plays at No. 2 Carson-Newman at 2 p.m. on Friday.

Pfeiffer  earned a spot in the ECAC Division III Women’s Soccer Championship.

Play in the 16-team single-elimination tournament gets under way on Saturday. Pfeiffer will kick off at 2 p.m. on the campus of McDaniel College in Westminster, Md.

Women’s hoops

Longwood’s Khaila Hall (West Rowan) was  granted a medical redshirt after missing 23 games last season due to injuries and concussions.

SAC favorite Carson-Newman fell to 11th-ranked Tennessee, 128-59, in a tuneup for the 2018-19 campaign on Monday night at Thompson-Boling Arena.

College volleyball

Catawba is seeded eighth for the SAC tournament and plays tonight at No. 1 Wingate at 7 p.m.

College football

Juwan Houston (West Rowan) had a career game for Guilford on Saturday, making 12 catches for 208 yards and a TD in a loss to Shenandoah.

Tywun Rivens (Salisbury) was the leading tackler for Campbell in a loss to Kennesaw State. He made nine stops.

Sewanee’s Wesley Porter (East Rowan) had seven tackles and three  pass breakups in a loss to Centre.

Kacey Otto (West Rowan) had a big game for St. Andrews on Saturday, completing 9 of 13 passes for 272 yards and three TDs. in a loss to Point, Ga.

Gardner-Webb’s Jayln Cagle (A.L. Brown) rushed 14 times for 105 yards and a TD in a win against Presbyterian.

Catawba’s Brenden Westbrook (Carson) made  five tackles in Saturday’s loss at Newberry.

In the BOXTOROW HBCU poll, N.C. A&T moved back into the No. 1 spot after beating Norfolk State, while previous No. 1 Florida A&M was losing to Howard.

   Wingate running back Nijere Peoples, Lenoir-Rhyne linebacker Sherrod Williams  and Wingate return man Ra’Quan Simmons are the SAC players of the week.

Bowie State and Fayetteville State will vie for the CIAA championship at 1 p.m. on Saturday in Salem, Va.

  

College swimming

Catawba’s swim teams finished up the Emory Fall Invitational on Saturday at the Brown Aquatic Center.

The Indians placed fourth in a meet that included Emory, Carson-Newman and Wingate.

College wrestling

Brandon Sloop (Carson)  was 2-2 for UNC Pembroke in Virginia Tech’s Hokie Open.

Local golf

Walt Kincaid and Mary & Gene Seaford edged out the team of Cathy Fleming, Susan Wydner. Harry Owen an Jan Godwin in McCanless Couples play.

Mary Seaford was closetst to the pin on No. 3 for the second straight week. Calvin Smith won longest putt.
