Service Above Self Youth Awards to recognize volunteerism

SALISBURY — The Rowan Rotary Club, Rowan County United Way, Cheerwine and Catawba College have partnered for the 2018 Service Above Self Youth Awards to recognize children for volunteer activities.

Kids ages 5-18 will be recognized for being role models for leadership and making the community a better place.

Last year, more than 250 nominations were received and 237 students were recognized for providing 40,512 hours of service in the 2016-17 school year.

Judges will choose three individual and group winners in elementary, middle and high school divisions. The top middle and high school winners will receive medals, cash awards and $60,000 worth of scholarships to Catawba College.

Nominees will be honored at the 23rd Service Above Self awards ceremony in Keppel Auditorium at Catawba College at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 29.

Students who volunteered in schools, churches and other parts of the community between Aug. 1, 2017, to Oct. 21, 2018, can be nominated.

Nominations will be accepted until Nov. 9.
