Area Sports Briefs: Catawba football home Saturday; South, Salisbury get JV football wins

Catawba hosts Tusculum in a homecoming football game Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
The Indians (1-5, 0-3 South Atlantic Conference) will be looking to snap a four-game slide. Tusculum is playing well and is 4-2 overall and 3-1 in the SAC.

High school volleyball
Carson and South Iredell will play for the NPC tournament championship Saturday morning at 10 a.m. at Carson.
Jayvee football
Nathan Chrismon and Gabe Pozyck ran for two touchdowns each as South Rowan’s jayvees beat Lexington, 28-20.
Chrismon scored on runs of 1 and 8 yards. Pozyck had scoring runs of 30 and 10 yards. Alex Fike kicked four PATs.

Salisbury romped against East Davidson, 42-0.
Kiligha Ellis had TD runs of 27 and 60 yards and a 2-point conversion.
Isaiah Black had a 67-yard TD run. Marcus Cook scored on a 12-yard run. Christian Morgan had a 25-yard fumble return TD.
Vance Honeycutt and Jeremiah Booker had 2-point conversions. Honeycutt caught a 20-yard TD pass from Reed Fugle.
Cook, Fugle and Christian Zavala led the Salisbury defense.

Carson’s jayvees lost to Statesville, 28-21.
Javon Smith had a 3-yard scoring run and A.J. Merriman had a 2-point conversion.
Alex London scored on a 12-yard run. London threw a 68-yard TD pass to Jake Harris. Andrew Beaver kicked a PAT.

West Rowan beat North Iredell, 20-0. A.L. Brown beat Northwest Cabarrus, 28-0. Davie County beat Glenn, 26-22.
High school volleyball
Davie County (21-2) won the Central Piedmont Conference Tournament on Thursday, beating Reagan three games to one.
High school tennis
Individual regional action starts this afternoon with Salisbury hosting the 2A Midwest Regional and Concord hosting the 3A Midwest Regional at Les Myers Park.
High school soccer
East Rowan lost to CATA on Thursday, 3-0.

West’s jayvees won against South Iredell, 1-0, with Salvador Bautista scoring on an assist by Daniel Ortega.
Mid. school football
China Grove’s seventh-grade football team defeated Corriher-Lipe, 28-0.
Dejuante Brown scored on a 63-yard run and on two 2-yard runs.
Joaquin Bernal scored on a 5-yard run. Grayson Steedley kicked two PATs. Defensive standouts were Michael Guiton, Collin Ball, Bernal and Isaiah Sechler.

China Grove’s eighth-graders beat Corriher-Lipe, 56-30, in 8-man football.
D’Arrion Cuthbertson ran for 314 yards and scored seven touchdowns on runs of 30, 83, 50, 2, 40, 15 and 32 yards. Cuthbertson also added three PAT runs.
Emory Taylor scored on a 50-yard run and had a PAT run.
Scoring for Corriher-Lipe was Sam Kincaid on a 41-yard pass reception from Trae Rucker, a 60-yard run and an 84-yard kickoff return. Kincaid added three PAT runs.
Bronson Hunt scored on a 65-yard kickoff return.
Defensive standouts for China Grove were Aquiles Bernal, Kaleb Woolf, Garrett Christy and Taylor with an interception.

Knox ended Spirit Week with a 52-0 win against North Rowan Middle on Thursday.
The Trojan defense, led by Anthony Dodd and Nick Flack, shut out the Mavericks.
Quarterback Jerome Blakeney III had a 1-yard touchdown and an interception.
JyMikaah Wells had TDs of 60, 35 and 5-yard touchdowns.
Dodd had a 15-yard TD. Nasir Lowe had a 60-yard touchdown.
Johnai Rippy had a 30-yard touchdown and a 45-yard fumble recovery.
Blakeney III, Wells, Dodd, Lowe, and Tyreze Miller had 2-point conversions.
Knox is 5-1 and will visit Mooresville on Oct. 24.
