Schools close as rains from Michael hit Rowan

SALISBURY — School officials across the Piedmont, including Rowan-Salisbury, have called off classes today as rains from Tropical Storm Michael pelt the region.

Cabarrus County and Kannapolis public schools have also called off classes, as have several private schools.

Rowan-Salisbury Schools are closed for students and staff.

A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Rowan County, with 4 or more inches of rain  forecast for the area. Heavy rain fell through the night. The core of the storm is moving across Georgia this morning.

Atwell Fire Department reports a tree down in the roadway on Millbridge Road near Caldwell Road.

Today
Showers and possibly a thunderstorm before 4pm, then showers likely. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Patchy fog. High near 76. Breezy, with an east wind 9 to 14 mph becoming north 16 to 21 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 34 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts in excess of 4 inches possible.
Tonight
A 30 percent chance of showers, mainly before 7pm. The rain could be heavy at times. Cloudy during the early evening, then gradual clearing, with a low around 51. Northwest wind 10 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 26 mph. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Sunny, with a high near 71. North northwest wind 6 to 9 mph.

Mostly clear, with a low around 49. Light north wind.
