Area Sports Briefs: Big volleyball win for South, Raiders lead CCC

South Rowan’s volleyball team topped Ledford in a five-set match on Thursday and stands alone in first place in the Central Carolina Conference.

Payton Black had 32 digs for the Raiders (12-3, 10-1)  in a 13-25, 25-20, 31-33, 25-11 and 15-13 victory.

Janiya Downs  had 17 digs, six blocks and 20 kills. Kira Rymer had 26 kills. Anna Rymer had six blocks and  29 assists.

East Rowan lost to Statesville in four sets on Thursday in a North Piedmont Conference match.

The Greyhounds prevailed 25-17, 25-27, 25-9 and 25-11.

Jayvee volleyball

South Rowan (9-6, 7-4  CCC) won 20-25, 26-24 and 15-10 vs. Ledford.

Kali Nelson had 20 digs. Zoie Miller had 18 digs. Mckinley Faw had 15 digs. Kendall Walter had seven kills. Makali Strong had five kills. Emma Owens had eight assists.

Carson won against West Rowan, 25-12 and 25-12 on Thursday.

Tate Barger had 14 assists and three kills for the Cougars. Audrey Andrews had two kills. Kylie Judy had three kills. Alayna Slusser had 11 digs  and five kills. Madison Berry  had three kills and two blocks. Jillian Dunn had 15 digs.

Jayvee football

West Rowan won, 14-8, in overtime against Concord on Thursday.

Andrew Kennerly threw a touchdown pass to Noah Loeblein.

Qadree Ziyad recovered a fumble for a touchdown.

Josh Noble, James Bell, Ashton Matthews, Nathan Estrada, Papa Brush  and Nigel McManus led the West defense.

South Rowan’s Nathan Chrismon scored on runs of 65, 15, 12 and 6 yards in a 28-27 overtime loss to North Davidson.

Chrismon threw a 2-point conversion pass to Braden Graham and Ward Bond kicked a PAT.

Davie County (3-1) beat A.L. Brown, 21-14. Northwest Cabarrus beat East Rowan, 50-8.

Carson won against Central Cabarrus, 28-14.

Carson, which led 14-8 at halftime, got rushing TDs from Javon Smith (8 yards), A.J. Merriman (4 yards and Hunter Burris (5 yards).

Jace  Jones and Ben Blumenthal blocked a punt, and Cadon Hudson returned  it 38 yards for a TD.

Aaron Bradshaw had an interception for the Cougars.

Salisbury beat Lexington, 24-0, as Vance Honeycutt threw touchdown passes to Jackson Murphy and Christian Morgan.

Jayden Gibson scored a touchdown. Marcus Cook had a punt return TD and an interception.

Amario Huntley had a fumble recovery and an interception. Christian Zavala recovered a fumble.

   

High school golf

East Rowan and South Iredell shot 135 to tie for first in a North Piedmont Conference match held at Twin Oaks on Thursday.

Camryn Corriher shot 43 for the Mustangs. Carmen Fraley shot 45, and Hailey Fesperman shot 47.

Sophia Brown shot 47 to lead Carson to third place.

SI’s Justine Caskey shot 42 for medalist honors.

High school tennis

Salisbury’s girls stayed undefeated on Wednesday with a 9-0 home win against Central Davidson.

Meredith Burton, Margaret Thurman, Abby Campion, Skye Mowery, Sophie Chmiel and Sutton Webb won singles matches for the Hornets.

Webb won a tiebreaker at No. 6. Doubles winners were Burton/Campion, Thurman/Mowery and Chmiel/Webb.

Salisbury (13-0, 12-0 CCC) cruised again on Thursday, beating West Davidson, 9-0.

Burton, Thurman, Campion, Mowery, Chmiel and Sydney Hlavacek racked up singles wins.

Thurman/Mowery, Burton/Campion and Chmiel/Hlavacek were winning doubles teams.

Carson won at West Rowan, 6-3, on Thursday, the first loss of the season for the Falcons.

No. 1 Payton Holt and  No. 3 Lacy Waggoner won singles matches for West, and Holt/Waggoner won at No. 1 doubles.

Winning singles for Carson were No. 2 Lindsey Conrad, No. 4 Jadyn Kirkpatrick, No. 5 Alison Sloop and No. 6 Quinnlan Watson.

Carson’s winning doubles teams were Conrad/Sloop and Carleigh Perry/Watson.

West Rowan will travel to Statesville for an NPC match on Tuesday, while Carson will host South Iredell.

East Rowan got a Senior Night win against Statesville on Thursday.

East’s seniors are Kristen Brady,  Sage Fann and  Victoria Plyler.

High school soccer

Salisbury improved to 11-2 overall and 7-1 in the Central Carolina Conference with a 7-1 win over East Davidson on Thursday.  Salisbury got goals from Axel Alejo (2), Juan Salazar, Juan Silva, Eriq Argrett, Jack Fisher, and Tony Figueroa.

Assists were credited to Bryan Garcia Cortez (2), Figueroa, Argrett, and Arrawn Yang.

Salazar got the Hornets on the board in the opening minutes  on an assist from   Figueroa and  SHS never looked back.

Salisbury plays at South Rowan on Monday. Game times  are 5:30 and 7 p.m.

College football

Some college football games won’t be played this weekend in the aftermath of Hurricane Florence.

Tusculum-UNC Pembroke and Fayetteville State-Elizabeth City State have been canceled.

8th-grade foootball

China Grove won against North Rowan, 30-8, on Wednesday.

Cam Burleyson threw TD passes of 16 and 8 yards to Emory Taylor.

D’Arron Cutherbertson scored on a 96-yard run and a 3-yard run. Taylor kicked three PATs.

Defensive standouts for the Red Devils included Burleyson with a caused fumble and numerous tackles; Cuthbertson with a fumble recovery, and Kaleb Woolf, Graham Yarbrough and Mikey Beasley.

Local golf

Thirty-seven GARS members played at the  the Revival at the Crescent.

Low ‘A’ Flight players were David Scearce and Donald Martin with a net of 63.68.

Low ‘B’ Flight player was Frank Masingo with a net of 64.35. Low ‘C’ Flight player was Ken Miller with a net of 63.65. Low ‘D’ Flight player was Steve Kale with a net of 63.29.

Ken Miller, 82, shot an 81: and Frank Masingo, 82, shot 81.  Low gross score was a 73 by Don Martin. Low net score was shot by Kale.

NFL

Chris Smith (West Rowan) had three tackles for loss for Cleveland in Thursday’s win over the Jets.
