Area Sports Briefs: Salisbury, South get tennis wins

Salisbury’s tennis team beat Ledford, 9-0, in a matchup of unbeaten squads on Wednesday.

Emma Nianouris, Meredith Burton, Abby Campion, Skye Mowery, Sophie Chmiel and Sydney Hlavacek won singles matches.

Campion and Hlavacek came back after dropping the first set.

Nianouris/Burton, Campion/Mowery and Chmiel/Hlavacek won in doubles for the Hornets (7-0, 6-0).

South Rowan’s tennis team swept Thomasville 9-0 on Wednesday for a Central Carolina Conference victory.

Singles winners for the Raiders (3-3)  were Kristen Minehart, Lauren Shell, Brianna Weatherwax, Jamie Minehart, Emma Leazer and Jennifer Mysayakhom.

Doubles winners were Shell/K. Minehart, J. Minehart/Mysayakhom and Leazer /Weatherwax.

Prep cross country

South Rowan’s boys won the pre-Central Carolina Conference meet held at Salisbury Community Park on Tuesday.

Noah Julian ran 18:35 for second place to lead the Raiders.

Ari Moya (6th, 19:32), Nolan Miller (8th, 19:56), Ian Waugh (12th) and Landon Cromer (24th) were scorers for the Raiders.

North Davidson’s Cameron Mercer won in 18:17.

Salisbury placed seventh, with Michael Lowry (13th) and Roarke Burton (28th) leading the way.

South Rowan’s girls were second in the pre-CCC meet, tying for first with East Davidson but losing the sixth-runner tiebreaker.

Bethany Rymer (2nd, 21:33), Madison Henry (5th), Madison McGuire (13th), Anahi Reta (15th) and Zoey Nichols (35th) led the Raiders.

Ledford’s Sheccid Ontiveros won in 21:05.

Salisbury couldn’t post a team score, but Leah Cressler placed sixth and Ellen Simons was ninth.

Prep soccer

West Rowan lost to Northwest Cabarrus, 4-2, in non-conference action on Wednesday.

Jose Mejia-Osornio and Alen Muskic scored for the Falcons (0-5-1). Assists were  contributed by Jose Guerrero and Jairo Lopez.

Carson lost at Piedmont, 3-1, on Wednesday.

Edward Jaimes scored for the Cougars (2-3).

Jayvee football

Lexington won 36-6 against North Rowan in a jayvee game  played  Wednesday at Philpott  Stadium. Tedrick Jenkins threw  five TD passes for the Jackets. Kahleb Craven caught four of them.

Local golf

The Corbin Hills Women’s Golf Association played its annual Red & Blue match play event on Tuesday.

The Blue team consisting of Bev Cobb, Susan Morris, Susan Houston, Becky Isenhour, Cindy Carmazzi, Faye Cline, Sheryl Johnson and Susan Wydner won.

Intimidators

KANNAPOLIS — Casey Golden homered and singled twice, scoring two runs as the Asheville Tourists beat the Kannapolis Intimidators 6-3 on Wednesday.

Asheville went out in front when Sean Bouchard hit a two-run home run.

  Craig Dedelow hit a solo home run for the Intimidators.

Justin Yurchak had three singles for the Intimidators.

College football

Kacey Otto (West Rowan) threw a touchdown pass in St. Andrews’ 15-13 win against Edward Waters.

Otto completed three passes for 80 yards.
