Area Sports Briefs: Parker debuts; Hargrave, Adams help Steelers win

NFL

Oakland Raiders rookie Brandon Parker (A.L. Brown, NC A&T) made his preseason debut in a 19-15 loss to the L.A. Rams on Aug. 18 and played 22 snaps at left tackle.

Javon Hargrave (North Rowan) made four tackles and Keion Adams (Salisbury) had one in Pittsburgh’s 16-6 preseason win against Tennessee on Saturday.

College football

Ten of the 11 Catawba regular-season football games will be televised live on over-the-air stations and cable outlets throughout the country this season.

WAXN channel 64 will serve as the Charlotte flagship station. The games will be produced by M.E.ProVideo & Distribution.

“We are excited to have this partnership to be able to have Catawba football available to 20 million households,”  Catawba AD Larry Leckonby said.

The broadcasts will begin with the season opener at West Georgia on Sept. 1. The only game that will not be carried is the game at Wingate on Oct. 13.

May knee surgery, his third, is expected to sideline Georgia punter Marshall Long (South Rowan) for another season.

Long was the starting punter for the Bulldogs in 2016 before suffering a knee injury.

College volleyball

Catawba won three out of four matches on Friday and Saturday to start the season.

Morgan Hester (Carson) had 39 assists and 17 digs in a win against Francis Marion and 41 assists in a win against UNC Pembroke.

Lindsay Elmore (Carson) make her college debut for Queens and had seven kills in a sweep of Virginia Union.

Michaela White (Carson) had 11 assists and three digs in UNC Wilmington’s loss to Colorado State.
