Area Sports Briefs: West, Carson, East volleyball win

West Rowan’s volleyball team got a big non-conference win at Cox Mill on Thursday.

West won a five-setter — 22-25, 25-20, 21-25, 25-21 and 15-10.

Tori Hester had 20 kills and 17 digs. KK Dowling had 11 kills and 12 digs.

Ava Link had 11 digs, four aces and 25 assists. Allison Ennis had 11 assists and 10 digs. Hannah Pratt had eight digs and four aces.

Emma Gusler had five kills, and Carly Stiller had four kills for the Falcons (6-0).

West’s jayvees lost, 2-0.

Carson romped against Robinson in a non-conference volleyball match on Thursday to stay undefeated. The Cougars (4-0) rolled 25-9, 25-16 and 25-9.

Mallory Weast had eight digs and seven kills. Grace Thomas had 20 assists and three kills and two aces. Katie Blackwell had two  aces and two kills. Jaden Vaughn had two aces and seven kills. Kary Hales had 20 digs.

Carson plays at West Davidson today, with the jayvees starting at 3:30 p.m.

• Carson’s jayvees swept Robinson. Kalil Cross had six digs. Victoria Storey had eight assists. Addison Keen had three kills.

South Rowan lost a Central Carolina Conference match to Ledford, 25-17, 25-17 and 25-19.

Payton Black had 12 digs. Anna Rymer had 10 digs and 13 assists. Kira Rymer had nine kills. Janiya Downs  had five kills.

• South’s jayvees were swept by the Panthers. Makali Strong had four kills. Kali Nelson had seven digs. Kendall Walter also had seven digs.

East Rowan swept Central Cabarrus 25-15, 25-20 and 26-24 on Thursday in a non-conference match.

The Mustangs (3-1) got 15 kills, 11 digs and four aces from Olivia Wright. Baleigh Hill had 20 digs, three kills and two aces.

Zoe Lason had 16 assists, while Lauren Shepherd had 15 assists and two aces.

• Reaghan Moore and Cady Goughenour led the Mustangs in a 2-1 loss in the jayvee match.

Prep tennis

West Rowan’s tennis team stayed unbeaten with a 9-0 win at West Iredell on Thursday.

Payton Holt, Madison Smith, Lacy Waggoner, Skylar Jahnke, Mira White, and Kelsie Crider won in singles in the non-conference matchup.

Holt/Waggoner, Smith/Crider and Jahnke/White were the winning doubles teams.

West is at A.L. Brown on Monday.

Prep soccer

West Rowan lost to Central Davidson, 2-1, in a non-conference match on Thursday.

Sebastian Trujillo scored the goal for the Falcons. Jose Guerrero assisted.

Diego Menendez and Jacob Joseph split time in goal.

• In the jayvee match,  West won, 3-1.

Mitchell Reyna had two goals and an assist. Johnny Hernandez scored a goal.

Sergio Reyna and Johnny Alvarez  had assists.

Christopher Mercado made five saves.

College baseball

Morehead City Marlins DH/pitcher Hunter Shepherd (Catawba) was named to the Coastal Plain League All-Star team.

NFL

Chris Smith (West Rowan) had a sack for the Cleveland Browns in a 5-0 preseason win against the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday.

Jayvee football

Andrew Kennerly and Noah Loeblein threw touchdown passes as West Rowan rolled against North Rowan, 42-6, on Thursday.

Garrett Fesperman and Loeblein had TD catches,

Akin Robinson and Cayleb Brawley ran for two TDs apiece.

James Ball, Ashton Matthews, Nathan Estrada and Papa Brush were standouts for the West defense.

Marvin Ridge took a 32-0 lead and held off A.L. Brown, 32-21, on Thursday.

YFL sign-ups

YFL sign-ups are at North Rowan Middle School this Saturday from 10 until 1.

There’s a coaches meeting at 9 a.m.

Local golf

Braddy Carter made a hole-in-one at Warrior on Thursday.

  Carter aced the 104-yard No. 6 hole with a sand wedge.

  Jim Crawford and Bill Sides witnessed the shot.
