Local spotlight — East Rowan 12U baseball

- The East Rowan 12U baseball team won two national tournaments in Myrtle Beach to end their season. The team competed in the Top Gun Summer Nationals tournament, July 13-15, against teams from North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia and Ohio, finishing with a run differential of 102-17 through seven games. The team’s final championship was won at the Youth Baseball Nationals tournament, Aug. 3-9, where it faced teams from Minnesota, New Jersey, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and Ohio. The team blew away the competition with a 132-9 run differential through nine games. East Rowan also swept the Homerun Derby, Around the Horn and Pitching Velocity competitions. Morgan Padgett, Nathan Hayworth, Carter Benson and McCall Henderson represented the team in the all-star game to wrap up the tournament. The team completed its Fall 2017-Summer 2018 season with an impressive overall record of 63-11. Players, in addition to Padgett, Hayworth, Benson and Henderson, included CJ Gray, Mason Neuhoff, Logan Dyer, Joseph Burleyson, Braden Shive, and Drew Nelson. Coaches were Chuck Hayworth, Kelly Sparger and Jay Padgett.
