EAST SPENCER — The town board is moving forward with an application for a Community Development Block Grant for a proposed sewer project.

The town was approached by Martin McGill of McGill Associates to apply for a sewer infrastructure grant to remove a lift station at Royal Giants Park and replace it with gravity lines in the system.

The town would also look at portions of North Long Street between Robinson Road and Heiligtown Road that may not be properly served with sewer for inclusion in the project.

The sewer lift station is 30 years old and, although it has been well maintained, maintenance will become more costly.

Town Administrator F.E. Isenhour said the town is eligible to apply for the grants every three years. He said there are other areas that need sewer rehabilitation.

The application for the $2 million grant would cost $5,000. The town has until the end of September to submit its application.

The application would not prevent the town from negotiating with Salisbury-Rowan Utilities about the transfer of the system if it’s determined that plan benefits the town.

East Spencer is nearing the end of a $2.4 million water line rehab project, which included replacing smaller pipes and fixing leaks in the system.

Also Monday, the board:

• Appointed a subcommittee made up of Aldermen Tony Hillian and Curtis Cowan and administrative assistant Tatia Seward to work on a new town logo. The town will work with Miller Davis Agency. Many nearby towns are in the process of branding and logo redesign with the company.

• Agreed to dispose of records with state approval. Certain records must be kept for a designated period. The state archives sets the guidelines. The records include copies of checks and invoices.

• Will look into implementing the ability to take electronic payments for services. Currently, the town accepts money orders and checks. The town is considering updating its software, and the electronic payment system would be compatible with the new software.
