Area Sports Briefs: Chrismon good in UNC scrimmage

Austin Chrismon (South Rowan) stood out in UNC’s first football scrimmage on Saturday at Kenan Stadium.

GoHeels.com reported that Chrismon, a redshirt freshman, got reps as a second team slot receiver and  had at least five catches in the scrimmage.

Hall of Fame

Jim Gantt, Mitch Ellis, Carlos Dixon, Cal Hayes Jr., Chris Sifford,  Fred Cooke and the late Darryl Gibson will be inducted into the Salisbury-Rowan Hall of Fame today.

Ceremonies for the 18th class are set for the Civic Center at 2 p.m. Admission is $10, unless a selected guest of an inductee.

Local golf

Logan Shuping (East Rowan) and Blake Taylor (a rising junior and teammate on the ECU golf team) qualified for match play starting tomorrow in the 67th Carolinas Four-Ball held at Camden Country Club with a 66 and 67.

Shuping made a birdie putt on No. 18 to guarantee a spot for match play tomorrow.

The field has been cut to 16 teams.

College baseball

Catawba’s baseball coaching staff has added Luke Setzer (East Rowan), a star with the Indians the last four years.

Legion baseball

Host Randolph County stayed undefeated in the Southeast Regional on Saturday, crushing (and eliminating) Florida, 11-1.

Harris Jackson did the job on the mound for Post 45 and his teammates turned double plays in the first and second innings.

A powerful Troy, Alabama team made  up mostly of college players,  battered Kentucky, 7-0, on Saturday, as the field was reduced to two teams.

Randolph (28-17) plays  Alabama (33-7) in the championship game today at McCrary Park at 1:30 p.m. Alabama lost to Randolph, 6-5, earlier in the tournament.

Alabama would have to beat Randolph twice today to advance to the World Series in Shelby.

  

Cross country

Bethany Rymer, a freshman at South Rowan, won the Run For Grace 5K held in Lexington.

Prep football

Davie County was a 42-0 winner in scrimmage action with West Caldwell.

Catawba camp

Catawba softball will offer a Labor Day prospect camp on Monday, September 3 at Whitley Field.

The camp is open to all current ninth to 12th graders and will have three sessions.  Contact head coach Mandy Morgan at akmorgan18@catawba.edu with any questions.

Minor leagues

Zac Almond (Catawba) had two more hits for Missoula on Saturday and is now batting .350.

Academic star

East Rowan’s Lauren Weisensel, a familiar name on East Rowan sports teams the last three years,  won’t be competing this school year. Weisensel, all-county in soccer and tennis as a junior, is focusing on academics and will be graduating early. She’ll head to Pfeiffer University in January on a presidential scholarship.
