Area Sports Briefs: Rowan Legion softball loses 2 to Kannapolis

In American Legion softball on Tuesday,  Kannapolis swept Rowan County in a doubleheader played in Granite Quarry.

Kannapolis scored four runs in the first inning and won the opener, 6-3.

Allie Baker went 3-for-3. Winning pitcher Kaylee Cook and Kaylyn Belfied had two hits each. Whitley Arnott earned a save.

Liza Simmerson had two doubles to lead Rowan. Brooke Lowery had a double. Lowery, Tate Barger and Haley Strange drove in runs.

In the second game, Cassidy Wall went 3-for-3 and led Kannapolis  (4-5) to a 4-1 victory.

Belfield had two more hits.

Arnott was the winning pitcher and struck out nine.

Rowan (3-6) was held to two hits. Olivia Gardner drove in a run. Rylie Stewart pitched a complete game.

Concord stayed in first place with a 5-4, 3-1 sweep of Davidson County on Tuesday.

Local golf

In the Men’s North & South Amateur Championship, Nick Lyerly (75-73 — 148) didn’t advance to match play.

Next for Lyerly is the Eastern Amateur on July 12-15.

Low ‘A’ Flight player was Gordon Correll with a net of 59.08.

Low ‘B’ Flight player was Ben Moore with a net of 54.73.

Low ‘C’ Flight player was Bob Sidden with a net of 61.44.

Low ‘D’ Flight player was Frank Rowell with a net of 60.72.

Low gross was shot by Correll and Larry Petrea with 68s, while low net was shot by Moore.
