Area Sports Briefs: South grad Travis starred at SCC

Hunter Travis, a sophomore shortstop from South Rowan High, was named Surry Community College’s Student-Athlete of the Year.
As a freshman in 2017, Travis helped lead the Knights to Region X regular season and tournament baseball championships while also being selected to the All-Region X team.
As a sophomore this season, Travis batted .294 with 10 homers and 41 RBIs and helped lead Surry to the Region X regular-season championship. He was an all-region infielder.
Travis was a Dean’s List student with a 3.42 GPA.
Hornets strong
Three Central Carolina Conference teams finished in the top 10 of the Wells Fargo overall athletic standings for the 2017-18 school year.
Salisbury finished sixth with 342½ points, Ledford was seventh with 307½ points, and North Davidson was eighth with 297½.
Bass fishing
Phillip Hedrick of Salisbury brought a five-bass limit to the scale weighing 24 pounds, 13 ounces Saturday to win th T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League Piedmont Division event at High Rock Lake.
For his victory, Hedrick earned $3,804.
Hedrick caught his fish in Second Creek and Crane Creek with a black Zoom Ol’ Monster worm.
Ricky McCrary of Lexington caught a bass weighing 6 pounds – the heaviest of the event in the Boater Division – to earn the Boater’s Big Bass award of $505.
Jason Hinger of Timberlake won the Co-angler Division Saturday after catching five bass weighing 15 pounds, 8 ounces.
Hinger earned $2,102 for his victory.
Junior Legion
West Rowan Junior Legion beat Kannapolis, 11-4, on Monday.
Cade Bernhardt was the winning pitcher. Zeb Burns and Andrew Kennerly had two hits. Burns had a triple. Kennerly had a double.

Legion baseball
After taking Monday off, Rowan County returns to action tonight at Kernersville at 7 p.m.

Colin Smith went 3-for-3 as High Point beat Kernersville, 5-2, in Northern Division action on Monday.

Eastern Randolph knocked off Davidson County, 6-5, in a Northern Division game on Monday.
Mason Canoy and Scottie Thompson drove in two runs each for the winners.
It was the first division loss for Post 8.

Kannapolis announced a makeup date this Wednesday for a home division game against Mooresville that was washed out earlier in the season.
Local golf
The Carolinas Golf Association will conduct the 51st North Carolina Junior Boys Championship at Pine Island Country Club in Charlotte today through Friday.
Michael Childress of Salisbury is one of the players to watch.
Childress will look to play well before heading north to the University of Richmond in the fall. Childress is seventh in the TYGA Junior Boys rankings.
MLB draft
Lake Norman pitcher Justin Jarvis, a fifth-round pick by Milwaukee has signed with the Brewers.
Jarvis signed for exactly the slot value of his pick — $327, 100.
American Legion softball
Tonight’s schedule: Rowan County at Concord; Davidson County at Kannapolis; Montgomery at Eastern Randolph, and Western Randolph at Stanly County.
Games start at 7 p.m. The format is a doubleheader with five-inning games.
Concord plays home games at Central Cabarrus. Kannapolis plays at Kannapolis Middle School. Stanly County plays at Pfeiffer.
Rowan hosts Davidson County on Thursday at East Rowan.
