Area Sports Briefs: Lyerly, Childress finish strong in NC Amateur

Nick Lyerly (East Rowan, UNC Greensboro) finished tied for fifth in the  58th North Carolina Amateur Championship on Sunday at River Landing in Wallace.

Lyerly shot 68-72-71-73 — 284 to finish 4-under. He finished 15 shots back of winner Harrison Rhoades who finished with a 66 on Sunday and romped to a 13-shot victory.

Lyerly made two birdies and three bogeys on Sunday. The bogeys came consecutively on 10, 11 and 12.

Michael Childress (Cannon School, Richmond) shot  73-76-71-71 — 291 and finished 3-over. He moved up to a tie for 28th.  Childress eagled the 509-yard 13th hole on Sunday.

Salisbury Lions Classic

In the Salisbury Lions Classic, the team of Derek Lipe, Darrell Lipe, Rusty Morrison and Dave Davis won the First Flight with a 52.

The team of Susan Morris, Dennis Andrade, Ronnie Eidson and Eddie Suttles won the Second Flight with a score of 60.

Shooting 64 to win the Third Flight was the team of Josh Witherspoon, Rick Witherspoon, Ken Safrit and Trevor Graham.

On the closest to pin prize holes, winners were Tom Dulski (second shot on No. 1), Chuck Valley (No. 2), Jim Fero (second shot on No. 4), Dusty Holder (No. 5), Drue Davis (second shot on No. 8), Joe Mando (second shot on No. 10), Valley (No. 13), Gene Seaford (second shot on No. 14) and Mark Seaford (No. 16).

Legion baseball

Kannapolis won against Concord, 5-4, in a Southern Division game on Sunday.

Kannapolis (5-5) is 2-0 in the division.

Jason White was the winning pitcher, with Jack Robinson getting the save.

Rohan Handa, Jacob Tuttle and Seth Morgan had three hits each for Post 115. White had two hits.

Mocksville is at Kannapolis for a big game on Tuesday, and Rowan County will visit on Thursday.

Colin Smith and Cameron Mills drove in three runs each to lead High Point to an 11-9 Northern Division win against Eastern Randolph on Sunday.

Local tennis

Local tennis player Ben Childress, a rising freshman, won the Queen City Challenge USTA  tournament over the weekend in Charlotte.

Childress cruised in the first round before knocking off the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds to win the title.

Minor leagues

KANNAPOLIS — Will Allen homered and had two hits as the Greensboro Grasshoppers defeated the Kannapolis Intimidators 3-1 on Sunday. With the victory, the Grasshoppers swept the three-game series.
