Area Sports Briefs: Lyerly strong in tournament

AIKEN, S.C. —  UNC Greensboro rising sophomore  Nick Lyerly (East Rowan) shot 69-71-71-70 and finished at 281, 1-over,  in the Palmetto Amateur.

He finished seven shots back of teammate  Bryce Hendrix, who won the tournament. Lyerly tied teammate Jonathan Brightwell for 11th place.

Lyerly’s best round came on Thursday with a 1-under 69 with three birdies to open the tournament.

American Legion

Rowan County returns to action tonight at Newman Park with a 7 p.m. game against Northern Division opponent High Point.

High Point, the host team for this summer’s state tournament, is 2-2.

Rowan (10-2) is set to play at Cherryville on Tuesday in a nine-inning game and is scheduled to play at Randolph County on Wednesday.

Next weekend, June 15-17, Rowan will host the NC/SC Challenge at Newman Park.

Rowan is scheduled to play Florence on Friday (7:30 p.m.), Sumter on Saturday (6:30 p.m.) and Rock Hill on Sunday (5 p.m.).

Rowan’s next division game is at Kannapolis on June 21.

In Junior Legion, West Rowan beat South Rowan on Friday, 9-4.

Zeb Burns hit a three-run homer. JT Fecteau had a two-run triple to back the pitching of Josh Allman.

Carson won against Salisbury, 7-4.

Carson hosts East Rowan tonight.

  

Minor leagues

ROME, Ga. — Austin Bush hit a walk-off single, as the Rome Braves topped the Kannapolis Intimidators 5-4 on Saturday.

Drew Lugbauer scored the game-winning run after he led off the inning with a single, advanced to second on a single by Derian Cruz and then went to third on a walk by Justin Smith.

The Intimidators tied the game 4-4 in the top of the seventh when Tate Blackman hit an RBI single, driving in Laz Rivera.

Reliever Brandon S. White (1-2) picked up the win after he struck out two and walked one over two scoreless innings. Jhoan Quijada (0-1) went four innings, allowing one run and four hits in the South Atlantic League game. He also struck out two and walked two.

Blackman was a triple short of the cycle, scoring a couple of runs while also driving home two for the Intimidators.

Wood bat leagues

Lee Poteat (West Rowan, Catawba) had four hits and five RBIs on Thursday for the Springfield Sliders in Prospect League.

Cameron Morrison (Catawba) got off to great start for Asheboro Copperheads of the Coastal Plain League.

Morrison started the season 7-for-12 with two homers and 10 RBIs.

CFL

In Calgary’s 39-12 preseason win on Friday at Saskatchewan, Romar Morris (Salisbury, UNC) had three carries for 13 yards and one catch for 8 yards.

He returned three punts for 16 yards and returned a kickoff 15 yards.

College baseball

Michael Pinkston West Rowan) recently completed his fourth season with Guilford College’s baseball program.

He started 22 games behind the plate for the Quakers (20-20-1) as a senior in 2018.
