St. John’s Lutheran Church awards $26,250 in scholarships

SALISBURY — On Sunday, St. John’s Lutheran Church awarded 33 scholarships totaling $26,250 to 26 students.
The scholarships are made possible by generous gifts from church members who want to encourage and support students in postsecondary education. The scholarships are part of the St. John’s Benevolent Foundation, a $9 million foundation started in 1974.
The recipients are:
• Thomas E. Gilbert and Viola H. Bailey Scholarship: Alex Yang, Matthew Woolly and Gemma Brown.
• Dorothy Click Fesperman Scholarship: Walker Brown, David Derrick, Gemma Brown, Bethanie Stauffer, Mary Wood, John Yang, Shelby Holden, Camantha-Rae Lyerly, Samuel McNeely, Griffin Myers, Riley Myers, Robert Sullivan and Caylynn Westberg.
• Carl Edgar and Edna Cauble Leazer Church Music Scholarship: Laura Agner.
• Scott Rierson Memorial Scholarship: Anna Patel, Mary Wood and John Yang.
• Emily May Brown Memorial Scholarship: Mary Kaufmann, Rebekah Lippard, Caylynn Westberg and Laura Agner.
• Bruce Alden Ketner Jr. Scholarship: James Emerson, Ashlyn Mills, Joshua Ruggs and Garrett Shermer.
• Margaret Cline and Ernest Crawford Safrit Sr. Scholarship: Callie Kirchin and Carolina Parrott.
• Hugh B. and Lena B. Lyerly Scholarship: Caroline Parrott, Caroline Plyler and Bethanie Stauffer.
Scholarship chairwoman Cyndi Osterhus made the presentations during the 11 a.m. worship service. Bobby L. Rusher III chairs the St. John’s Benevolent Foundation.
