Daughters of the American Revolution award scholarships
The Elizabeth Maxwell Steele Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution has awarded the Daughters of the American Revolution National Defense Committee ROTC Medal to three local JROTC students.
The medal is presented high school seniors who have demonstrated academic excellence, dependability, good character, adherence to military discipline, leadership and a fundamental and patriotic understanding of the importance of the Reserve Officers Training Corps.
Recipients are: Kaitlyn Thompson, East Rowan High School; Carolina Hawkins, North Rowan High School and Kayla Caldwell, Salisbury High School.
Merit Finalist named
Mary Caroline Kaufmann, a senior at Salisbury High School, was named a Merit Scholarship finalist.She is the daughter of Dr. Greg and Elizabeth Kaufmann of Salisbury, and the granddaughter of Sara Kaufmann of Salisbury, and Genevra Kelly of Rockingham. She will be attending Davidson College and wishes to study philosophy and medicine.
Salem Lutheran awards scholarships
Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church awarded three scholarships to local students on Graduate Recognition Sunday, June 3.
The following students were recognized as recipients of the Hubert and Allie Shulenburger Scholarship. Recipients of the Shulenburger Scholarship must have been members of Salem for at least two years and awards may be made based on merit and need.
Claudia Barger: Claudia, a 2018 graduate of West Rowan High School, will attend High Point University. She is the daughter of Braxton and Penny Barger.
Chase Webb: Chase is a rising senior at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, where he is majoring in economics and music. He is the son of Mark and Stacy Webb.
The following student was recognized as the recipient of the J. E. Briggs Memorial Music Scholarship. Recipients of the Briggs Scholarship must be enrolled in a degree program in music and awards may be made based on merit and need.
Matthew Langford: Matthew is a rising senior at Appalachian State University, where he is majoring in instrumental music education at the Hayes School of Music. He is the son of Glenn and Patty Langford and is a member of First United Methodist Church, Salisbury.
Local teachers attend NCCAT
Several area educators recently attended programs held at the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching, a recognized national leader in professional development programming for our state’s teachers.
Participating educators from Rowan-Salisbury Schools included Jessica M. Cash, Jessica F. Tucker and John Yates of Carroll T. Overton Elementary School; Robert E. Klinger of Charles Erwin Middle School; Amy Stallings of Millbridge Elementary School; Cassondra Heilig of North Rowan Elementary School; Stacy Davis, Jessica Johnson and Jennifer H. Nussman of West Rowan Middle School and Abagail K. Covington of Millbridge Elementary School.
Covington was named the NCCAT 2017–2018 Phillip J. Kirk Jr. Honored Educator Scholar.
Increasing teacher effectiveness is fundamental to improving public education. NCCAT provides teachers with new knowledge, skills, teaching methods, best practices and information to take back to their classrooms.
High Point University
The following local students made the Spring 2018 Dean’s List at High Point University.
China Grove: Micah Helms.
Rockwell: Angela Haynes.
Salisbury: Addison Gantt, Sarah Julian, Samantha Pritchard, Zachary Tucker and Natalie Whicker.
Students named to the Dean’s List must maintain a 3.5 GPA or higher.
UNC-Asheville
The following local students graduated from UNC-Asheville in May.
Faith:Sydney Elizabeth Cole.
Rockwell: Jonathan Charles Carpenter.
Salisbury: Isabella Nickelle Daniels.
Wofford College
Madeline Ann Labovitz, of Salisbury, received degree from Wofford College during commencement exercises on May 20.
Troy University
David Conley, of Kannapolis, graduated from Troy University during Term Four of the 2017-2018 academic year. Conley received an associate of science in general education degree from the College of Arts and Sciences.
