Letter: Dan Nicholas Park’s great untapped potential

Dan Nicholas Park is a one of the top family and tourist attractions in Rowan County, offering a variety of activities for adults and children alike. Three additional features would increase the appeal of Dan Nicholas Park tremendously, drawing visitors from nearby counties and further establishing Rowan County as a family-friendly place to locate.
1. Vastly improved cell phone service. Mobile reception is either poor or non-existent, depending on the carrier. Mobile phones are a necessity in our culture and lack of service is a deterrent to visitors.
2. Dog park. Provide a fenced area for dogs to roam unleashed and dog owners to socialize.
3. Mountain biking/hiking trail network. The terrain at Dan Nicholas would provide excellent mountain biking and hiking opportunities.
Rowan residents must now venture to Tanglewood or Lake Norman State Park to enjoy these amenities. Adding to the excellent existing amenities at Dan Nicholas will bring visitors and their expenditures (food, gas, supplies) to Rowan County as well as increase the reputation and appeal of our area.
I encourage the Rowan County commissioners to consider the potential that Dan Nicholas Park offers and create a budget/plan for improvements such as these. It might be possible to lease space for a cell phone tower and thereby fund these improvements.
