Area Sports Briefs: Rowan athletes place in track state championships

In the 3A Track and Field Championships at North Carolina A&T on Sunday, Carson’s Mikaila Gadson finished third in the girls 400.

Gadson ran 57.22.

West Rowan’s Jalen Houston placed fifth in the 110 hurdles in 14.77 seconds.

East’s Sam Wall was ninth in the triple jump with an effort of 42 feet, 7.25 inches.

A.L. Brown’s Joshua Parks placed in four events.

He was fourth in the 400 (48.46), fourth in the 110 hurdles (14.65), fifth in the high jump (6-2) and sixth in the 200 (22.49).

A.L. Brown’s Brandon Hernandez was third in the 1600 in 4:18.90.

In the 1A State Championships, also held at N.C. A&T on Sunday, North Rowan’s Lakayla Birst was third in the girls high jump, clearing 5 feet, 2 inches.

North Rowan’s boys scored a point with an eighth-place finish by the 4×200 team of Tykier Walker, Devin Kendall, Marcellus Steele and Gregory Crawford. They ran 1:34.25.

Local golf

The Cannon School duo  of Michael Childress and Landson Robbins shot 68 on  Sunday and qualified for the match play portion of the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball   Championship that will start  today in Florida.

Childress/Robbins shot 67 in the first round. They tied for 13th in qualifying and were one of the 32 teams to advance out of 128.

In McCanless Couples  play, good weather prevailed as the team of Calvin Smith, Harry Owens, Ralph and Pam Carver edged the team of Susan Wydner and Mary & Gene Seaford for a first place victory.  Mary Seaford was closest to the pin.

College baseball

In the Southeast Regional on Sunday, North Greenville eliminated UNC Pembroke, 2-0.

Columbus State ousted North Greenville, 6-3.

Columbus State takes on  Belmont Abbey today at North Greenville for the championship. Columbus State would have to beat the Crusaders twice.

Pairings and game times are set for the  Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Championship, which gets underway Tuesday at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

North Carolina (37-17, 22-8 ACC) earned the No. 1 overall seed and will head up Pool A. The Tar Heels will be joined by eighth-seeded Georgia Tech (31-25, 14-16) and 12th-seeded Pitt (27-25, 11-19). Pool B features No. 2 Clemson (43-13, 22-8), along with No. 7 Miami (27-25, 16-13) and No. 11 Notre Dame (24-28, 12-18).

No. 3 NC State (40-14, 19-11) is joined in Pool C by No. 6 Florida State (39-17, 16-13) and No. 10 Virginia (28-24, 12-18), while Pool D features No. 4 Duke (39-14, 18-11), No. 5 Louisville (40-16, 18-12), and No. 9 Wake Forest (25-30, 13-17).

  Each team in the four pools will play one game against each of the other two opponents in its pool Tuesday through Friday (May 22-25). The four teams with the best records  in their pools will advance to Saturday’s semifinals, with the winners playing on Sunday in the ACC Championship Game.

Livingstone

Four Livingstone College athletic teams won team academic awards during the 2017-18 athletic year.

The Blue Bears were tops in the CIAA in GPA in men’s cross country, football, golf and men’s outdoor track and field.

Minor leagues

Colton Laws (Carson) pitched four shutout innings for the Lansing Lugnuts in a Midwest League game on Sunday.

Laws allowed four hits. He struck  out four and didn’t walk a batter.

  KANNAPOLIS —  Laz Rivera singled three times as the Kannapolis Intimidators beat the Hickory Crawdads 2-1 in the first game of a doubleheader on Sunday.

Robbie Ross got Ryan Dorow to fly out with runners on second and third to end the game for his first save of the season.

Kannapolis started the scoring in the second inning when Anthony Villa hit a solo home run and Justin Yurchak scored on a ground out.

The Crawdads cut into the deficit in the fourth inning when Yohel Pozo hit a solo home run.

Kannapolis left-hander Parker Rigler (2-1) picked up the win after allowing one run on just two hits over five innings. Opposing starter Jean Casanova (1-3) took the tough loss in the SAL game.
